About the kits

Knit your own lopapeysa — pattern and yarn in one box

Every kit pairs a traditional Icelandic pattern with genuine Ístex lopi — the exact yarn the design was written for. Knitting your own lopapeysa takes time and patience, and that is rather the point: hours of good work, and a sweater you will never take for granted.

Good to know

Knitting kit questions, answered

I've never knitted a lopapeysa — can I manage a kit?
Many of our customers knit their first lopapeysa from one of these kits. Choose a one-colour or simple-yoke design to start, and warm up with our free patterns. Stuck mid-project? Write to us — we knit these ourselves.
What exactly is in the box?
The knitting pattern and the genuine Ístex lopi yarn for the design. On most kits you can add needles as an option at no fuss.
Which yarn do the kits use?
Most use Léttlopi — the classic lopapeysa yarn — while some designs call for Álafoss Lopi, Plötulopi or Einband. Each kit page says which.
Do US orders pay customs on delivery?
No — duties and taxes are settled at checkout, so nothing is due when the parcel arrives. No customs bills, no courier fees.

An Icelandic knitting kit is the whole project in one box: the pattern and every skein of genuine Icelandic lopi you need, measured for your size, in the designer's chosen colours. Cast on tonight; wear a lopapeysa you made yourself.

What's in the kit — and which one should you pick?

Each kit includes the pattern (in English) and the exact yarn quantities for the size you order — no guessing, no leftover-skein roulette. Browse by who you're knitting for: men's sweaters, women's sweaters and children's, or explore by designer — from Ístex's own Védís Jónsdóttir to Nordic names like Tove Richter and Linka Neumann in our designer collection. If it's your first lopapeysa, a single-colour yoke pattern is the gentlest start — and our free patterns let you try the craft before you commit to a big project.

We're knitters in a knitting country — if you're stuck choosing between two kits, tell us who it's for and we'll give you an honest answer.
