Overview
What's in the kit
Friður — peace. A celebration of light and peace, gratitude and care, says the pattern. Védís Jónsdóttir’s round mat from Ístex’s Lopi 41 — the pattern calls it a rug — is 70 cm across, ruby red with an ecru border that reads GLEÐILEGA HÁTÍÐ · LJÓSS OG FRIÐAR in Icelandic, or HAPPY HOLIDAYS · LIGHT AND PEACE in English.
Included
- Icelandic Álafosslopi wool yarn — all five balls the pattern calls for
- Knitting pattern in English (PDF) — emailed right after purchase
- ADDI knitting needles — only if you choose the kit with needles

Round, 70 cm (27½″) across.
Gauge
13 sts × 18 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 6 mm needles — watch the tension in the two-colour border and go up to 6.5 mm if needed.
Needles used in the pattern (included when you choose the kit with needles)
6 mm (US 10) circular needles, 40, 60 and 80 cm
6 mm circular needle, 100 cm — the pattern names a 120 cm needle (6 or 6.5 mm) for the last rounds; our longest 6 mm is 100 cm
6 mm double-pointed needles
Not included
A 6 mm crochet hook for the circular cast-on.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the middle outwards: 8 stitches cast on in a circle with a crochet hook, then increase rounds that double the stitches — 16, 32, 64, 128, 256 — with plain rounds between them, moving to longer needles as it grows. Then a 28-round two-colour border from the chart, a purl–knit–purl edge and a very loose bind-off.
Design: Védís Jónsdóttir — pattern from Lopi No. 41 (no. 20), Ístex.
