An apron inspired by the Icelandic national costume, þjóðbúningurinn — embroidered with floral and leaf patterns in decorative gold and silver stitching, in the spirit of the traditional upphlutur. Few people ever owned the original costume; the apron puts a piece of that heritage within everyone's reach, and it comes in a decorative wallet that can be reused.
What is the upphlutur?
Icelandic women's national dress comes in five traditional forms — skautbúningur, kyrtill, faldbúningur, peysuföt and upphlutur. The upphlutur, once everyday wear, is a bodice costume, often black or in bright colors like red and blue, decorated with metal-thread embroidery — the very stitching these aprons echo.
