What you get with the Vatnajökull blanket

  • 200 g of RDS-certified duck down in sewn-through baffles: warm for its weight, and it packs small
  • A water-repellent nylon shell that sheds damp, dirt and pet hair
  • Snap fasteners along the edges, so it closes into a poncho and leaves your hands free
  • 140 × 200 cm (55 × 79 in) open, and its own carry bag for the car or the rucksack

Icelandic wool blanket in a living room

Icelandic wool, designed in Iceland

The blanket Icelanders reach for

Light on the lap and properly warm, because Icelandic wool has two layers: long outer fibres that shrug off damp, soft inner fibres that hold the heat. Air it out rather than wash it, and it lasts for years.

Why you'll love it

  • Down that is accounted forThe Responsible Down Standard certifies that the down comes from birds that were not live-plucked or force-fed, with the supply chain checked at every step. OEKO-TEX certification covers the whole blanket for harmful substances.
  • Made for Icelandic weatherLín Design designed it for cold evenings on the deck, the campsite and the summer house, where a wool blanket gets heavy with damp. The shell shrugs the damp off and the down keeps its warmth.
  • Lives in the carIn its bag it takes up very little room, so it can stay in the boot for a football match, a picnic or a long wait, and come indoors for the sofa in winter.

Questions people ask before they buy

Is it a wool blanket?
No. This is the one blanket in our range that is not wool: a down blanket, like a thin duvet, with 200 g of duck down inside a nylon shell. That is why it is so light and why it packs into a small bag.
How does the poncho work?
Snap fasteners run along the edges. Fold the blanket round your shoulders, close the snaps down the front, and it stays put while you hold a coffee or a book. Open them and it is a flat blanket again.
Is it waterproof?
Water-repellent, not waterproof. The nylon shell sheds drizzle, damp grass and spilled drinks if you brush them off, and it does not collect dog hair. It is not meant to be left out in the rain.
Can I wash it?
Yes, in the machine at 30 °C on a gentle programme with a mild detergent and no fabric softener. Dry it on low heat or air it until it is completely dry, and give it a shake now and then so the down stays fluffy.
Who makes it?
It is designed and sold by Lín Design, an Icelandic home-textile brand in Kópavogur. The down is RDS certified and the whole blanket is OEKO-TEX certified.
