1 í hendi — one in the hand. “Three birds, one in the hand,” says the pattern; flying towards the sun, they keep cold hands warm. Védís Jónsdóttir’s mittens from Ístex’s Lopi 40 are knitted in four shades of Léttlopi — navy, apricot, fjord blue and air blue — one ball of each.

Size
S/M — 40 stitches around the hand at 20 stitches to 10 cm. For a slightly looser, bigger pair the pattern suggests 4.5 mm needles.
Gauge
20 sts × 25 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 4 mm needles.

How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the cuff up, starting at the thumb side: 6 cm of 1×1 rib in navy on 3.5 mm needles, then the four-colour pattern from the chart on 4 mm needles, with paired increases at the start and end of the round. At round 18 the thumb stitches go on a holder; the hand continues to round 38 and is decreased on both sides. The thumb is knitted in fjord blue with a navy tip. Floats longer than six stitches are woven in at the back.
