Description

Selir — seals resting on black sand, a wave plunging and a seagull flying high. Védís Jónsdóttir writes that the pattern was a long time in the making: as a child she imagined the seals following her along the coast, and now they have almost disappeared. From Ístex’s Lopi 38, a black heather Léttlopi yoke sweater with seals and seagulls in white, grey and stone blue.

How it is knitted
Body and sleeves are knitted in the round from 1×1 rib in three colours — black heather, grey and stone blue — with a small border pattern above the rib, up to the underarms. They are joined and the yoke with seals and seagulls is knitted in the round from a chart. Short rows across the back in white raise the back of the neck, and the collar is 1×1 rib in stone blue, grey and black heather. The seals’ eyes are French knots in black heather.

Which size should I knit?

Five sizes — XS, S, M, L and XL — with a chest of 89, 98, 102, 111 and 120 cm and 40 to 46 cm from the edge to the underarm. Sleeves are 45 to 49 cm for women and 49 to 53 cm for men.

Will I have yarn left over?

The kit holds the amount for L and XL: 9 balls of black heather, 2 of grey, 2 of stone blue and 2 of white. XS and S use 7 black heather and 1 grey, M 8 and 2. Every size uses 2 stone blue and 2 white.

Why are there short rows at the back?

After the yoke a few short rows are knitted across the back in white, so the neck sits higher at the back than at the front. Then the collar is 10 rounds of stone blue rib, 3 of grey and 2 of black heather.

How are the seals’ eyes made?

With black heather and a tapestry needle — one French knot for each eye, marked on the chart. The tapestry needle is not in the kit.

What does the kit with needles include?

4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm, 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm, and 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, the sizes the pattern names.
