Jólahundur — Christmas dog. In Icelandic folklore the Yule Cat eats anyone who doesn’t get a new piece of clothing for Christmas, so “this Yule dog will not be caught by the Yule Cat,” says the pattern. Védís Jónsdóttir’s dog sweater from Ístex’s Lopi 38 is garnet red Léttlopi with a black belt and white seed-stitch edges.

How it is knitted
The lower back is knitted back and forth with ribbed edges, then joined in the round with a ribbed belly section and a black stripe — the belt. The front legs start with white seed-stitch cuffs; they are joined to the body for the yoke, which is decreased in four rounds, and the neckband is white seed stitch. A small inset under each front leg gives the sweater room to move. Measure the dog first, says the pattern, in case the length or the width needs adjusting.
