Icelanders take their nammi seriously. Icelandic candy has its own character — above all the marriage of chocolate and licorice, a combination that sounds strange exactly once, until you try it. This is the real thing, from the brands every Icelandic childhood is built on: Nói Síríus (chocolate makers since 1920), Freyja, Góa, Appolo licorice, Sambó and handmade Kandís.

What does Icelandic candy actually taste like?

Expect deeper, saltier licorice than you may be used to, milk chocolate with real character, and combinations like Þristur and Draumur that layer the two. Kókosbollur — chocolate-covered marshmallow puffs — are the crowd-pleaser; Opal and Tópas pastilles are the acquired taste Icelanders defend fiercely. If you're new to it, start with a mixed selection or browse treats under $20 and find your favourite the fun way.

We eat this candy ourselves (quality control, we call it), and we pack every order in Hafnarfjörður.
