About the lopapeysa

The genuine lopapeysa — hand-knitted from pure Icelandic wool

Every sweater in this collection is hand-knitted from pure Icelandic wool — the genuine lopapeysa, made the way it has been for generations. Icelandic wool carries two natural fibre layers: a soft, insulating inner coat and a long, water-repellent outer coat. That is why a real lopapeysa keeps you warm in weather that sends other knitwear home.

Good to know

Lopapeysa questions, answered

How do I find my size?
Lopapeysur are knitted to fit generously. The most reliable way: measure a favourite sweater flat and compare it with the size chart on each product page. Our full guide: how to find your size.
Is Icelandic wool itchy?
It has a rustic feel — a lopapeysa is made to be worn over a shirt or light layer, not on bare skin. The wool softens noticeably with wear, and that same robust fibre is what makes it windproof and long-lived.
How do I care for a lopapeysa?
Mostly, you don't wash it — airing it out is usually enough, as Icelandic wool is naturally self-cleaning. When it truly needs washing: hand wash in cool water with wool soap, press the water out gently and dry flat.
Do US orders pay customs on delivery?
No — duties and taxes are settled at checkout, so there is nothing to pay when the parcel arrives. No customs bills, no courier fees.

Every sweater in this collection is hand-knitted in Iceland from 100% Icelandic sheep's wool — the traditional lopapeysa, made the way it has been for generations. Because each one is knitted by hand, no two are exactly alike.

What makes Icelandic wool special is the sheep it comes from. The fleece carries two natural fibres: a soft inner coat that insulates, and a glossy outer coat that repels wind and rain. Knitted together as lopi, they make a sweater that is remarkably warm for its weight, breathable enough to wear all day, and durable enough to last decades with simple care.

Which lopapeysa is right for you?

Pullovers are the classic choice; cardigans (button or zip) are easier to layer; hooded versions add extra weather protection. Most of our designs use the traditional circular yoke pattern in the natural colours of the Icelandic sheep — greys, browns, creams — alongside modern colourways. Between sizes? Icelandic sweaters are worn relaxed — see our size guide, or have one made to your measurements (men's custom made, women's custom made).

We're a small family-run shop in Hafnarfjörður, Iceland, and we've done things the same way since 2013: real Icelandic wool, real hand-knitting, and honest answers — if you're unsure about wool, sizing or a custom order, just ask us.
