This free Icelandic mittens knitting pattern is Holuhraun volcano, designed by Hulda Hákonardóttir for Ístex. The mittens are black from the cuff up; a jagged black-and-red border leads into red at the top of the hand. One ball of black and one ball of red Léttlopi make a pair in either size.
About the volcano mittens pattern
- Sizes: women’s and men’s. The leaflet gives lengths, not hand measurements.
- Yarn: Léttlopi (50 g, about 100 m a ball): 0059 black ×1 and 9434 red ×1.
- Needles: 4½ mm (US 7) double-pointed needles.
- Two charts, one for each size, show the colour pattern.
Numbers are women’s (men’s). You cast on 32 (36) stitches, work knit 2, purl 2 rib for 6 (8) cm, then increase to 36 (42) stitches and knit 6 (8) cm. For the thumb you knit 7 (8) stitches with scrap yarn, placed differently for the right and the left hand, and carry on. After about 10 (12) cm more, the top is shaped with decreases on every other round down to 8 (10) stitches. Later you pick up 16 (18) stitches around the scrap yarn and knit the thumb for about 6½ (8) cm before decreasing.
The yarn
The pattern uses Léttlopi 0059 black and 9434 red (crimson red in our shop), one ball of each. Both colours are still made by Ístex, and Léttlopi is spun in Iceland. The same designer’s Bardarbunga volcano hat is black and red too and takes one more ball of each.
