This free Icelandic hat knitting pattern is the Bardarbunga volcano hat, designed by Hulda Hákonardóttir for Ístex. Red stripes rise from a black moss-stitch band and meet at the crown, where seven little cords finish the top. It takes one ball of black and one ball of red Léttlopi.
About the volcano hat pattern
- One size. The leaflet prints no measurements.
- Yarn: Léttlopi (50 g balls), 1 black and 1 red.
- Needles: 3½ mm and 4½ mm double-pointed needles or a 40 cm circular needle.
The hat is knitted in the round. You cast on 84 stitches on 3½ mm needles and work moss stitch (knit 1, purl 1, then knit the purls and purl the knits on the next round) for 5 cm. On 4½ mm needles you carry on in moss stitch until the hat measures 7.5 cm. Then a 31-round chart brings in the red and decreases from 84 to 7 stitches; between the red the black keeps its knit and purl texture. On each of the last 7 stitches you cast on 15 stitches with the cable cast-on and bind them off again, which makes the cords. The leaflet explains the cable cast-on.
The yarn
The hat leaflet says only “black” and “red”, with no colour numbers. Our suggestion is Léttlopi 0059 black and 9434 red (crimson red in our shop): we took these numbers from Ístex’s Holuhraun mittens leaflet, by the same designer. Léttlopi is spun in Iceland by Ístex. Knitting the Holuhraun mittens as well takes one more ball of each colour.
