Védís Jónsdóttir’s Manhattan Hat, an Ístex single pattern: a Léttlopi beanie knitted in the round with a city skyline in two-stranded colourwork — dark galaxy buildings with apricot and mimosa windows against an air blue sky that turns to fjord blue — above a seed-stitch brim. The pattern gives two tops — two little ears (it calls them hornlets), as in the photo, or a classic round top — in sizes S/M and M/L. It lists the five colours but no yarn amounts. All five colours are still made.

Sizes
S/M and M/L — 90 (96) stitches cast on, about 50 (53) cm round (our calculation from the gauge); 19 (20) cm from the cast-on edge to the top shaping.
Gauge
18 sts × 24 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 4.5 mm needles.
Needles
3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle, 40 cm, for the seed-stitch brim
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle, 40 cm, for the chart and the rest of the hat
4.5 mm (US 7) double-pointed needles for the ears, or for the round top as the stitches get fewer
You will also need
Two stitch holders (or scrap yarn) for the ears, and a tapestry needle for grafting the top and weaving in the ends — the instructions use them, but neither is in the pattern’s list.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the cast-on edge up. Cast on 90 (96) stitches in galaxy (A) on the 3.5 mm needle and work 3 cm of seed stitch — the pattern calls it seed stitch rib: K1, P1, then purl the knit stitches and knit the purls. On 4.5 mm the 19-round chart is knitted in two-stranded colourwork: dark galaxy buildings with apricot (B) windows low down and mimosa (C) windows higher up, against an air blue (D) sky that turns to fjord blue (E). The hat then goes on in fjord blue to 19 (20) cm from the cast-on edge. For the ears, the piece is divided in half, 24 (26) stitches at each side go on holders, and the middle is grafted together, 21 (22) stitches on each side; each ear is knitted on double-pointed needles, with a K2tog at the start and an SSK at the end of every round, down to 8 (10) stitches, and drawn together. For the classic round top, four decrease rounds, with plain rounds between them, take it down to 10 (11) stitches, which are drawn together.
