Good to know

María — your questions, answered

Is this a knitting or a crochet pattern?
Both, but mostly crochet. The bands at the edges and the navy cords are knitted; the cap, the mittens and the fingerless mittens are crocheted onto the bands in single, half double and double crochet with a 4.5 mm hook. The pattern uses US crochet terms (sc, hdc, dc).
What size is it?
Ladies’ size. There are no finished measurements: the cap band is knitted to about 40 cm, or until it goes round the head when slightly stretched, and each mitten band to about 16 cm, or round the wrist. The mittens are crocheted on past the thumb hole until they cover the little finger, about 8 rounds.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. Stone blue (9418): 2 for the cap, 2 for the mittens and 1 for the fingerless mittens. Navy blue (9420): 1 ball for all the cords. All three pieces take 6 balls. Both colours are still made by Ístex; our shop calls 9418 stone blue heather.
How are the spirals made?
Each is a thin cord of 3 stitches on 4 mm needles, always knitted from the right side: slide the stitches back to the other end and carry the yarn round the back. The cap has two cords, 20 and 30 cm long, sewn in spirals on its side; each mitten has one of 30 cm on its back. The fingerless mittens have none.
Anything to watch for?
The fingerless mittens are written in one line: work as the mittens until past the thumb hole, then “Dc5 rnds together and end with one hdc, 1 sc and 1 sl st” — by our reading 5 more rounds of double crochet; there is no thumb. The materials list leaves out a stitch marker and a tapestry needle.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The cap, the mittens and the fingerless mittens are, in their original colours. The beige trench coat is not.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with two photos, the size, materials and all the instructions; a blank page; and Ístex’s back cover.
