María — Guðný María Höskuldsdóttir’s set from Ístex’s Lopi 30: a cap and mittens crocheted in stone blue heather Léttlopi on top of knitted garter-stitch bands, each with a spiral of navy cord. The pattern also has fingerless mitts, and the kit has the yarn for all three.

Size
Ladies’ size. The cap band is knitted to go round the head, about 40 cm, and each mitten band to go round the wrist, about 16 cm, so you can fit them as you go.
Gauge
The pattern gives no gauge: the bands are knitted to fit, and the cap and mittens are then crocheted onto them.

4 mm and 5 mm double-pointed needles — 5 mm for the garter bands, 4 mm for the cords

A 4.5 mm crochet hook — the cap and mittens are mostly crocheted.
How it is knitted
Each piece starts with a knitted band: 10 stitches of garter stitch on 5 mm, about 40 cm for the cap and 16 cm for each mitten, joined into a ring by knitting the cast-on edge together with the last row. The rest is crocheted in a spiral from one edge of the band: single crochet, then double crochet, decreased to close the top. The mittens have a chained thumb hole and a crocheted thumb; the fingerless mitts carry on for 5 rounds of double crochet past the thumb hole and have no crocheted thumb. Thin knitted cords in navy — 20 and 30 cm for the cap, 30 cm for each mitten — are sewn on in spirals.
