Good to know

GSM — your questions, answered

What size are they?
One size — the pattern says “Ladies”. It gives no gauge and no finished measurements. The hand is 32 stitches round on 4.5 mm needles, and the mitten top is knitted 3 rounds and then 18 more, or to the length you want, before the shaping.
How does the mitten top work?
16 stitches are picked up across the back of the hand, just below the fingers, and 16 are cast on for the palm. It is knitted up over the fingers and decreased like an ordinary mitten top. Pull it over the half-length fingers, or fold it back to free them.
How much yarn do I need?
2 balls of Léttlopi (50 g each) in crimson red (9434) for the pair.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. The top decreases cannot end at the printed “7 sts”: 4 stitches go each round from 32, so decrease until 8 are left, then knit 2 together all round and draw the yarn through the last 4 (our reading). The thumb needle size is not given; by our reading it is 4.5 mm. And the materials list leaves out the waste yarn, the stitch holders and the markers.
Who designed them, and what does GSM mean?
The pattern names no designer — it is from Ístex’s Lopi 24 — and it does not explain the name. The photo shows the mittens on a mobile phone, with the top folded back and the thumb tip out.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials, size and all the instructions, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
