Why you'll love it

  • Long tapered cuff44 stitches at the edge, decreased four times to 28 at the wrist — roughly 24–25 cm of cuff (our calculation).
  • Buttons as decorationFour in a line on each mitten, sewn on at the end — there are no buttonholes to knit.
  • Half-ribbed wristFive rounds with rib on one half of the round and plain knitting on the other, mirrored for the left and right mitten.
  • Thumb on scrap yarnSix stitches are knitted with scrap yarn and picked up later, so there is no thumb gusset to shape.

Good to know

Happ — your questions, answered

What size are they?
One size, given as a woman’s size. The pattern prints no finished measurements. The hand is 36 stitches around at its widest — about 20 cm at 18 stitches to 10 cm (our calculation). Above the thumb the pattern has 14 rounds, a decrease round to 32 stitches and then 13 rounds “or as long as preferred” before the top, so you can make the hand longer or shorter.
How long is the cuff?
59 rounds from the cast-on edge to the wrist rib — 5 rounds of rib and 54 of stocking stitch — roughly 24 to 25 cm at the pattern’s gauge (our calculation). It tapers from 44 stitches at the edge to 28 at the wrist. In the photo the cuffs are pushed up the arms.
Do the buttons open?
No. They are decoration only; the mittens have no buttonholes. The pattern lists 8 buttons and says only “Sew on buttons, see photo” — it gives no size. In the photo each mitten has four silver-tone buttons of different designs in a line at the wrist.
How much yarn do I need?
2 balls of Léttlopi (50 g balls) in black, 0059, for the pair.
Is the sweater in the photo part of the pattern?
No. The navy flecked sweater with a patterned yoke is a different pattern; Happ is the mittens only.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The top shaping says to repeat a decrease round and a plain round, but not how many times before you decrease every round — the pattern leaves that to you. The thumb’s first decrease, *k2tog, k1*, leaves one stitch over on 13 stitches. The note explaining SSK is missing a word: slip 2 stitches knitwise, one at a time, then insert the left needle into the fronts of them and knit them together. And the scrap yarn for the thumb is not in the materials list.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, one page with the materials, gauge and instructions, a blank page and Ístex’s back cover.
