Hand-knitted in Iceland

One sweater, one pair of hands

Every lopapeysa we sell is knitted by hand in Iceland from Icelandic wool, by knitters who have made hundreds of them. It takes days, not minutes — and it shows in the yoke.

Why you'll love it

  • One zigzag, three timesThe band of brown, black and white zigzags that circles the yoke comes back above the ribbing at both cuffs and at the hem.
  • Four quiet coloursThe body is Light Beige Heather. The pattern is White, Brown Heather and Black Sheep Heather. Nothing bright.
  • Named for the valkyriesValkyrja is the Icelandic word for a valkyrie. In the Prose Edda, valkyries are the women Odin sends to every battle to decide who falls and who wins.
  • Knitted by hand, so no two matchEach Valkyrja is knitted by hand in Iceland. Yours will differ slightly in shade and stitch from the one in the photo.
  • Light for a thick knitPlötulopi is wool that has not been spun. Ístex, which makes it, says garments knitted from two or three strands are exceptionally light and airy, and surprisingly strong once knitted.
  • Wool with two kinds of fibreÍstex describes the Icelandic fleece as two fibres in one: fine, soft inner fibres that insulate, and long, strong outer fibres that resist the weather.

Questions people ask before they buy

Does it close with buttons or a zip?
Buttons. The cardigan in our photo has eight round, silver-coloured buttons with a spiral pattern, set from the hem to the top of the neckband, so you can wear it closed to the throat or open.
Is there a pullover with the same pattern?
Yes. Skjaldmey is our pullover with the same zigzag yoke in the same beige, brown and white. You will find it among our hand-knitted sweaters.
How does it fit, and which size should I take?
The size table gives the chest measured flat, from underarm to underarm, so double it for the measurement all the way round: size S is 50 cm flat, 100 cm round. In our photo the cardigan sits at the hip and is not tight in the body or the sleeves. Lay a cardigan you like flat, measure it the same way and pick the nearest size. If it is still not right, an unworn Valkyrja can be exchanged within 30 days of delivery; the return postage is yours to pay.
Is it itchy?
On bare skin it can be. Icelandic wool is not merino: the long, strong outer fibres that make it hard-wearing are not as fine as the inner ones. A cardigan is worn over other clothes anyway, so choose a top with a collar or a polo neck if your neck is sensitive.
How do I wash it?
By hand, in lukewarm water of about 30°C with a wool soap. Move it gently and do not leave it to soak: Ístex, which makes the yarn, advises against soaking anything knitted from Plötulopi. Press the water out without wringing and dry it flat on a towel, away from heat and direct sun.
What makes it an "Icelandic lopapeysa"?
Íslensk lopapeysa (Icelandic lopapeysa) has been a protected designation of origin in Iceland since 2020, registered by MAST, the Icelandic Food and Veterinary Authority. A sweater may use the name only if it is hand-knitted in Iceland, in the round and without seams, from new lopi wool shorn from Icelandic sheep, with a patterned yoke. The rules say the sweater may be open or closed, so a cardigan counts.
