Penguins is a free penguin knitting pattern for a children’s lopapeysa, designed by Linda Konráðsdóttir for Ístex. A ring of black and white penguins goes round the yoke of a sun yellow Léttlopi sweater, and a small patterned band sits above the rib at the hem and cuffs.
About the penguin knitting pattern
- Five sizes for 2, 4, 6, 8 and 10 years: chest 64, 69, 73, 78 and 87 cm all the way round.
- Body length to the underarm 23, 26, 30, 34 and 37 cm; sleeves 24, 27, 30, 34 and 37 cm.
- Léttlopi, 50 g balls: main colour 3, 4, 4, 5 or 6 balls, plus one or two balls of each of the three pattern colours.
- Gauge: 18 stitches and 24 rows to 10 cm on 4½ mm needles, with 3½ mm needles for the rib.
Body and sleeves are knitted in the round from the lower edge, then joined for the yoke. The neckband is knit 1, purl 1 rib, folded in half to the inside and slip-stitched down.
The yarn
The pattern’s colours are 1411 sun yellow, 0056 light ash heather, 0051 white and 0059 black. Sun yellow is no longer made by Ístex. Our suggestion, not the pattern’s: 1703 mimosa, a yellow from Ístex’s current Léttlopi range, in the same amounts. We stock the other three: 0056 (our shop calls it ash heather), 0051 white and 0059 black.
For grown-ups, Olga Begak’s Penguin Lopapeysa kit is a different pattern with its own ring of penguins, in women’s and men’s sizes.
