Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 28 — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
The main blue (0098) is no longer made by Ístex; the pattern prints only its code. This kit has blue tweed (1234) in its place — colour M, the empty squares in the charts: the body, the sleeves and the blue between the yoke motifs. Of today’s Álafosslopi colours it is the closest to the blue in the photo, but it is a tweed with small white flecks that the original does not have, so the sweater will look a little speckled. If you would rather not have the flecks, denim heather (0010) is a heathered blue without the tweed flecks — greyer and less bright than the blue in the photo. You can choose another shade in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes by the child’s height — 140, 152 and 164 cm — with a chest of 92, 97 and 102 cm, 54 to 62 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 35 to 41 cm. The chest is roomy for those heights (our reading), so compare it with a sweater that fits.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 164 cm size: 5 balls of blue tweed, 3 of white and 2 of navy — 10 balls. The 140 cm size uses 4 of blue tweed and 2 of white, the 152 cm size 4 of blue tweed and 3 of white.
Is the pattern for both colour versions?
Yes — the leaflet has one set of instructions and charts for No. 28 (blue) and No. 29 (brown), and the chart key gives the colours for each. This kit has the yarn for the blue No. 28; the brown No. 29 is sold as a separate kit.
Anything to watch for?
On the sleeves, the pattern says Chart 1 “does not work out” in sizes 140 and 152: 38 and 40 stitches do not divide by the 6-stitch border, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm — knit on as written. In size 152 each sleeve puts 10 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 9, so you graft 10 stitches to 9.
Which photo shows this version?
The boy with the dog — the blue No. 28, knitted in the original blue. The photo has a blue cast, so the white looks bluish. The girl in the brown sweater is No. 29, also sold as a kit; the boy beside her wears Lopi 12 no. 27, a different pattern. The jeans are not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 60 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The sleeve instructions use 6 mm double-pointed needles, but the materials list leaves them out; the kit with needles includes them.
