Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 28 & 29 — your questions, answered

Is this pattern No. 28 or No. 29?
Both. The leaflet is one pattern — one set of instructions and charts — for two colour versions of the same sweater. No. 28 is blue, with navy rib and neckband and navy stars on a white band (the boy with the dog). No. 29 is chocolate brown, with white rib and neckband and black sheep heather stars on the white band (the girl in front of the horses). The materials list gives the two versions’ colours side by side, with the same amounts, and the chart key gives both sets of codes.
Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For No. 29, yes: 0867 (M), 0051 (A) and 0052 (B) are still made by Ístex — our shop calls them chocolate heather, white and black sheep heather. For No. 28, two of the three: 0051 (A, white) and 0118 (B, navy) are still made, but the main blue, 0098 (M — the body, the sleeves and the blue between the yoke motifs), is not. The leaflet prints only the numbers; Ístex calls 0098 cadet blue in its Lopi 18 no. 16 leaflet. Our blue No. 28 kit uses 1234 blue tweed in its place — close to the blue in the photo, but a tweed with small white flecks that the original does not have. The cover photo has a blue cast, so its white looks bluish.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes by the child’s height — 140, 152 and 164 cm — with a chest of 92, 97 and 102 cm, a length of 54, 58 and 62 cm to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 35, 38 and 41 cm to the underarm. The body is 33 (36, 38) cm from the cast-on edge to the underarm. The chest matches the body’s stitch count at the pattern’s gauge (our check), and it is roomy for those heights (our reading), so compare it with a sweater that fits.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, the same amounts for both versions: M 4 (4, 5), A 2 (3, 3) and B 2 in every size — 8 (9, 10) balls. No. 28: M cadet blue (0098), A white (0051), B navy (0118). No. 29: M chocolate heather (0867), A white (0051), B black sheep heather (0052). In No. 28 the rib and neckband are knitted in B; in No. 29 they are knitted in A, the white, so No. 29 uses more of its white (our reading) — the pattern does not change the amounts.
Anything to watch for?
In sizes 140 and 152 the pattern itself says chart 1 “does not work out” on the sleeves: 38 and 40 stitches do not divide by the 6-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm — knit on as written. In size 152 each sleeve puts 10 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 9, so you graft 10 stitches to 9. The chart key prints the codes short — 98, 51, 118 and 52 — and gives No. 29’s main colour as “87”: a misprint for 0867, as the materials list has it. The needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but the sleeve instructions change to them. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The two sweaters are. On the cover, the boy’s jeans and the dog are not. In the other photo, the girl’s bandana and jeans are not, and the boy beside her wears Lopi 12 no. 27, a different pattern, with a hat and dark trousers.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo (No. 28), a page with a small photo of No. 29, the materials for both versions, the sizes, the tension and all the instructions, a page with both charts and the key, and a full-page photo of No. 29 with Ístex’s address.
