Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 25 — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Both blues in the pattern are no longer made by Ístex. The main blue (9303) — cornflower, Ístex’s name for it in its Lopi 18 leaflets; this leaflet prints only the code — is replaced by space blue (1233). It is colour M, the empty squares in the charts: the body, the sleeves and the background of the yoke. Space blue is a vivid royal-blue heather and keeps the bright blue look, but it is clearly darker than the bright cornflower in the photo. The darker blue (9304), which the pattern does not name, is replaced by navy (0118). It is colour A, the filled dots: the rib at the hem and cuffs, the neckband, the dark zigzags and the rings round the flowers, and the whole hat. Navy is much darker than the royal blue in the photo; we chose it so the rib and motifs stay clearly darker than the body, as they are in the pattern. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134 and 140 cm — with a chest of 78 to 92 cm, 42 to 54 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 25 to 35 cm. The hat has two sizes, one for 110 and 122 cm and one for 134 and 140 cm — about 46 and 48.5 cm round by the stitch counts (our calculation).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 140 cm size plus the hat: 4 balls of space blue, 3 of navy (2 for the sweater, 1 for the hat) and 1 of white — 8 balls. The 110 and 122 cm sizes use 3 balls of space blue. By our estimate the 140 cm size uses nearly all of the 4 balls of space blue, so there is little to spare: if you make the body or sleeves longer, add a ball.
The materials list has five amounts for four sizes — which is right?
The list prints five numbers for each colour — 3-3-4-4-5 for the main blue — but the pattern has only four sizes. We read the fifth number as belonging to a 152 cm size that is not in this leaflet: the companion leaflets from the same series, 12-26 and 12-27, were laid out for five sizes up to 152 cm. So the kit uses the first four, and 4 balls of the main colour for the 140 cm size (our reading).
Anything else to watch for?
The chart key prints “82” for the main blue (9303) and “74” for the darker blue (9304); we read these as older codes for the same two colours (Lopi 12 no. 31 also keys 9304 as “74”). On the sleeves of sizes 134 and 140 the pattern itself says the border chart “does not work out”: 38 stitches do not divide by the 6-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. In sizes 110 and 140 each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater and the hat are. The white trousers are not. The cover of the leaflet also shows a girl in a pink cardigan — that is Lopi 12 no. 26, a separate pattern, not in this kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) and 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 6 mm double-pointed needles are for the sleeves, the top of the yoke and the hat.
