Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 25 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Only the white. The leaflet prints only the numbers. 0051 (B — the white flowers and dots) is still made by Ístex; our shop calls it white. Both blues are no longer made: 9303 (M — the body, sleeves and yoke background), which Ístex’s Lopi 18 leaflets call cornflower, and 9304 (A — the rib, the neckband, the dark zigzags and the rings round the flowers, and the whole hat), for which we have found no name. Our kit for this pattern uses 1233 space blue for 9303 — a vivid royal-blue heather, clearly darker than the bright cornflower in the photo — and 0118 navy for 9304, much darker than the royal blue in the photo, so the rib and motifs stay clearly darker than the body.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134 and 140 cm — with a chest of 78, 83, 88 and 92 cm, a length of 42, 46, 50 and 54 cm to the centre front neck, and sleeves of 25, 29, 33 and 35 cm to the underarm. The chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round (it matches the stitch count — our check). The hat has two sizes, one for 110 and 122 cm and one for 134 and 140 cm — about 46 and 48.5 cm round by the stitch counts (our calculation).
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. The sweater: M (9303) 3 (3, 4, 4), A (9304) 2 and B (0051) 1 in every size — 6 (6, 7, 7) balls. The hat takes 1 more ball of 9304.
The materials list has five amounts for four sizes — which is right?
The list prints five numbers for each colour — 3-3-4-4-5 for 9303, 2-2-2-2-2 for 9304 and 1-1-1-1-1 for 0051 — but the pattern has only four sizes. We read the fifth number as belonging to a 152 cm size that is not in this leaflet: Lopi 12 nos. 26 and 27, from the same series, have a fifth size, 152 cm, and no. 27’s first four chest sizes are the same as this sweater’s. So the 140 cm size takes 4 balls of 9303 (our reading) — by our estimate with little to spare, so if you make the body or sleeves longer, allow an extra ball.
Anything else to watch for?
The chart key prints “82” for 9303 and “74” for 9304; we read these as older codes for the same two colours (Lopi 12 no. 31 also keys 9304 as “74”). On the sleeves of sizes 134 and 140 the pattern itself says the border chart “does not work out”: 38 stitches do not divide by the 6-stitch repeat, so the border breaks where the round starts, under the arm. In sizes 110 and 140 each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8 and ease in the extra one (our tip). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The sweater and the hat are. The white trousers and the shoe are not. The leaflet’s cover also shows a girl in a pink cardigan and hat — it is marked 12-26 there: Lopi 12 no. 26, a separate pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, with this sweater and Lopi 12 no. 26; a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension and all the instructions, and the hat with its own photo; a page with both charts and the colour key; and Ístex’s back cover.
