Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 13 — your questions, answered

Why are three colours different from the pattern?
The blue (0098), red (9389) and gold (9332) of this pattern are no longer made by Ístex. The leaflet prints only the codes; cadet blue, burnt red and antique gold are Ístex’s names for them in its Lopi 18 leaflets. Denim heather (0010) takes the place of cadet blue. It is colour M, the empty squares in the charts: the body, the sleeves, the blue in the yoke, the roll collar and the mittens. It is a heathered mid blue, close to the denim blue in the photo. Happy red (0047) takes the place of burnt red. It is colour A, the filled dots: the twisted rib at the hem, cuffs and neck, the red band and checks in the yoke and border, and the mitten cuffs. It is a clear red, a little warmer and more vivid than the deep red in the photo. Golden heather (9964) takes the place of antique gold. It is colour C, the triangles: the gold zigzags and the small gold motifs. It is a little deeper and warmer than the golden yellow in the photo. Black (0059) is still made and is the black in the pattern. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 102 to 120 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The mittens come in three sizes, S, M and L. The pattern gives no hand measurements; by the stitch counts the mittens measure about 18.5, 20 and 23 cm round the hand (our calculation).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL plus the mittens: 8 balls of denim heather (7 for the sweater, 1 for the mittens), 2 of happy red, 2 of black and 1 of golden heather — 13 balls. For the sweater, XS uses 5 balls of denim heather, S and M 6, and L 7. The mittens’ list names red but gives no amount, so their rib comes from the sweater’s 2 balls of red (our reading). The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
Are the mittens in the kit?
Yes — they are on pages 2 and 3 of the same pattern. They start with 8 cm of stocking stitch in denim heather, which rolls back as in the photo, then 5 cm of red twisted rib; the hand is denim heather on 6 mm needles. The thumb opening is made by knitting a few stitches with a scrap of contrast yarn, which you later pull out to pick up the stitches for the thumb. Their ball of denim heather is in the kit.
Anything to watch for?
The yoke chart is drawn in sections. On rounds 16, 21, 30 and 40 the pattern tells you to decrease a number of stitches evenly spaced instead of drawing the decreases, so you place them yourself; the stitch counts all check (our calculation). The chart key prints the codes short — 98, 389, 59 and 332: in this kit those are denim heather, happy red, black and golden heather. The contrast yarn and the 2 stitch markers the mittens need are not in the materials list.
Which sweater in the photo is this one?
The man’s — blue with a red rib, a red band in the yoke and a blue roll collar, knitted in the original colours. The woman wears the blue mittens from this pattern, but her red sweater is Lopi 12 no. 11, a different pattern, not in this kit. The jeans and her scarf are not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 6 mm double-pointed needles are listed for the mittens; each sweater sleeve needs them too, because it changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 42 to 48 stitches — about 32 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular. Stitch holders, contrast yarn and markers are not included.
