Couple by a harbour. The man wears the Lopi 12 no. 13 sweater — mid blue with red twisted rib at the hem, a red, black and gold border above it, a yoke of gold and black zigzags with a red band, and a blue roll collar over red rib — and the woman wears its blue mittens with red ribbed cuffs, shown in the pattern’s original colours (the blue, red and gold are no longer made). Her red sweater is Lopi 12 no. 11, a different pattern; her scarf and earring and the jeans are not part of this one

Good to know

Lopi 12 No. 13 — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Only the black. The leaflet prints only the numbers. 0059 (B — the black in the border and yoke) is still made by Ístex; our shop calls it black. 0098 (M — the body, sleeves, the blue in the yoke, the roll collar and the mittens), 9389 (A — the twisted rib at the hem, cuffs and neck, the red in the border and yoke, and the mitten cuffs) and 9332 (C — the gold zigzags and small gold motifs) are no longer made; Ístex’s Lopi 18 leaflets call them cadet blue, burnt red and antique gold. Our kit for this pattern uses 0010 denim heather for 0098 — a heathered mid blue, close to the denim blue in the photo — 0047 happy red for 9389, a clear red, a little warmer and more vivid than the deep red in the photo, and 9964 golden heather for 9332, a little deeper and warmer than the golden yellow in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes, XS to XL, with a chest of 102, 106, 111, 115 and 120 cm and a length of 62, 65, 68, 70 and 72 cm to the centre front neck. Sleeves are 41, 43, 43, 45 and 45 cm to the underarm for women and 46, 48, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. The body’s 132 to 156 stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. The mittens come in sizes S, M and L; the pattern gives no hand measurements — by the stitch counts the mittens measure about 18.5, 20 and 23 cm round the hand (our calculation).
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. The sweater: M (0098) 5 (6, 6, 7, 7), A (9389) 2, B (0059) 2 and C (9332) 1 in every size — 10 (11, 11, 12, 12) balls. The mittens take 1 more ball of M; their list names A (9389) for the cuff rib but gives no amount, so it comes from the sweater’s 2 balls (our reading). The pattern gives one amount for both sleeve lengths.
How are the mittens made?
They are on pages 2 and 3 of the leaflet, knitted in the round. Cast on 22 (24, 28) stitches in M on 4.5 mm double-pointed needles and knit 8 cm of stocking stitch, which rolls back as in the photo, then 1 round in A and 5 cm of twisted rib. The hand is M on 6 mm, increased to 24 (26, 30) stitches; the thumb opening is knitted over 5 (5, 6) stitches with a scrap of contrast yarn, which you later pull out to pick up 12 (12, 14) stitches for the thumb. The top is decreased at both sides to 8 (10, 10) stitches and drawn together. The left mitten has its thumb opening on the other side.
Anything to watch for?
The yoke chart is drawn in sections. On rounds 16, 21, 30 and 40 the chart only gives the number of stitches to decrease and does not draw the decreases, so you place them yourself, spread evenly round (our suggestion); the stitch counts all check (our calculation). The chart key prints the codes short — 98, 389, 59 and 332 for 0098, 9389, 0059 and 9332. The sweater’s needle list has no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 42 to 48 stitches — about 32 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so use the mittens’ 6 mm double-pointed needles there too (our reading). The contrast yarn and the 2 stitch markers for the mittens are not in the materials list. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Which sweater in the photo is this one?
The man’s, marked 12-13 on the leaflet’s cover: blue with a red rib, a red band in the yoke and a blue roll collar over red rib, in the original colours. The woman wears the blue mittens from this pattern, but her red sweater is Lopi 12 no. 11 (marked 12-11), a different pattern. The jeans, her scarf and her earring are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, with this sweater and Lopi 12 no. 11; a page with two small photos — the sweater and the mittens — the materials, sizes, tension, all the sweater instructions and the start of the mittens; a page with the rest of the mittens, both charts and the key; and Ístex’s back cover.
