Hver is a free Icelandic hat knitting pattern from Ístex (Lopidesign LS-03), designed by Védís Jónsdóttir. The pattern explains the name: Hver “means hot spring or geysir in Icelandic”. The top of the hat is left open, so you can pull a ponytail through it, as in the photos.
About the Hver hat pattern
- One size: circumference 44 cm (printed as measured flat), height 26 cm with the top rolled.
- Yarn: one 100 g plate of Plötulopi, 1431 Arctic Blue.
- Needles: 10 mm, 8 mm, 6 mm and 4 mm double-pointed needles.
The hat gets thinner as it goes up. Plötulopi is unspun wool that comes as a plate, and this pattern holds several strands together. You start with six strands on 10 mm needles in K2, P2 rib for 11 cm, then four strands on 8 mm for 6 cm, then two strands on 6 mm for 3 cm. Two decrease rounds turn the rib into K2, P1 and then K1, P1, and the last 3 cm are plain knitting with a single strand on 4 mm, bound off very loosely. The pattern shows how to wind the plate into two small balls before you start, and how to join the strand if it breaks.
The yarn
We sell the pattern’s colour, Plötulopi 1431 (our shop lists it as Arctic Blue Heather). One plate makes the whole hat, so it is the only yarn you need. Any other Plötulopi colour can be used in the same way.
