Why you'll love it

  • Two strands, two coloursEvery stitch is two strands of Plötulopi held together, always two different colours, so eight colours are paired into nine blended shades.
  • Colours your wayThe pattern calls the colour changes in the body and sleeve chart a suggestion: change one colour at a time and let the other carry on into the next band.
  • Little “lice”Small navy crosses dot the bands of colour on the body and sleeves; the yoke changes to bigger navy motifs.
  • A hat from the leftoversHapp uses what is left of the sweater yarn, in the same colour pairs, with two big pom-poms attached like mouse ears.

Good to know

Auðna & Happ — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Not all of them. Berry heather (1050), light berry (1054) and faded denim (1053) are no longer made by Ístex; our Auðna kit uses 2027 wine red, 1425 sunset rose heather and 2023 light blues blue in their place. Midnight blue (0709), winter blue (1432), golden yellow (1424), ash heather (1026) and clover green (1423) are still made. Our shop’s names differ a little — winter blue heather, golden yellow heather, light ash heather, clover green heather — so go by the colour numbers.
Why two strands?
The pattern uses Plötulopi, an unspun wool, as a 2-ply yarn: two strands held together, in two colours at a time. The key gives every chart colour as a pair — midnight blue with winter blue is the dark navy of the rib, the collar and the motifs; the other eight pairs mix berry heather, light berry, golden yellow, ash heather, faded denim and clover green. That gives 14 stitches and 19 rows to 10 cm on 5.5 mm needles.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes — S, M, L, XL and XXL — with a chest of 94, 99, 103, 107 and 111 cm all the way round, 32, 33, 35, 36 and 37 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 45 to 49 cm. The pattern gives no total length. The hat comes in S and M/L, 52 and 56 cm round.
How much yarn do I need?
The same in every size: Plötulopi in 100 g plates — 2 each of midnight blue (A) and winter blue (B) and 1 each of the other six colours, 10 plates in all. The hat is knitted from what is left; the pattern gives no separate amount for it.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few small things. The hat instructions point to “info on how to make pom-poms on page x” — there is no such page; the pattern only says to cut two identical 9 cm circles with 3 cm centre holes. They also call the hat’s colourwork “intarsia”, but by our reading the hat chart is knitted in the round like the sweater, never more than two colour pairs in a round. The lists leave out stitch holders, a tapestry needle and something to cut the pom-pom circles from.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The sweater and the hat are. The black skirts, leggings and tights are not. The photo without the hat is from Ístex’s photo set for the pattern, not from the PDF.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, the materials, gauge, notes, the body, the sleeves, the yoke and chart 1; a page with chart 2 and its key, the collar, the finishing and the whole hat pattern with its chart; and Ístex’s back cover.
