Strompur — chimney. Védís Jónsdóttir’s hat from Ístex’s Lopi 28, knitted in the round in carmine red Plötulopi: chunky rib that starts in nine strands at the brim and thins to six and then three towards the top, which is bound off loosely and left open to roll up — the photo shows a ponytail through it. One colour, one woman’s size; carmine red (1430) is still made.

Size
One size, given in the pattern as a woman’s size. No finished measurements are given; the brim is 32 stitches of 9-ply rib — about 44 cm around at the pattern’s gauge, before stretching (our calculation).
Gauge
One k2, p2 repeat (4 stitches) = 2.5 cm in 3-ply Plötulopi on 6.5 mm needles, 4 cm in 6-ply on 10 mm and 5.5 cm in 9-ply on 12 mm.
Needles
12 mm (US 17), 10 mm (US 15) and 6.5 mm (US 10½) double-pointed needles, used in that order from the brim up
The instructions say 6 mm for the 3-ply rounds; the materials list and the gauge give 6.5 mm
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the brim up. First the plates are wound: three strands together, softly, into 3 balls of different sizes — one ball is 3-ply, two together 6-ply and all three 9-ply. 32 stitches are cast on in 9-ply on 12 mm for 14 rounds of 2×2 rib (k2, p2), then 6 rounds in 6-ply on 10 mm and 5 rounds in 3-ply on the finest needles. A decrease round turns the rib into 2×1 (k2, p1, 24 stitches) for 5 rounds, a second takes it down to 16 stitches, and after 5 rounds of plain knitting the hat is bound off very loosely and left open. It is rinsed by hand in lukewarm water and laid to dry, and the top is left to roll up.

Why you'll love it
- Open at the topBound off loosely and left open — in the photo a ponytail comes through it.
- Chunky to fine9-ply rib at the brim on 12 mm needles, then 6-ply on 10 mm, then 3-ply towards the top.
- Rolled topFive plain rounds at the top, left to roll up after rinsing.
- Rib that narrowsThe 2×2 rib becomes 2×1 when the stitches are decreased, so the ribs run on towards the top.
