Good to know

Höttur — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colour in the photos?
Yes. Carmine red heather (1430) is still made by Ístex as Plötulopi.
What is 2-ply Plötulopi?
Plötulopi is unspun wool that comes as a flat plate. The Höttur pattern says “2-ply Plötulopi” without explaining it; Ístex’s Gnótt pattern in the same book (Lopi 34) does: wind two strands from the plates softly together before knitting, and knit them as one. The pattern lists one plate for the hat.
What size is it?
One size. The strip is 16 stitches wide — about 13 cm at the pattern’s gauge (our calculation) — and 95 cm long. The pattern gives no head measurement; it says to check the length by wrapping the strip round your head, as in the finishing, before you bind off.
How is the brioche stitch knitted?
Back and forth over 16 stitches. Row 1: *knit 1, yarn over, slip 1 purlwise*, to the end. Row 2: *knit the yarn over and the slipped stitch together, yarn over, slip 1 purlwise*, to the end. Repeat these two rows. In the photos it makes deep ribs that run round the head.
How is the turban put together?
Mark the middle of the strip’s length — that is the centre back. Wrap the strip round the head, knot it at the front and take the two ends to the back of the head, the right-hand one on the right side over the top and the left-hand one on the left. Sew the ends in under the edge at the centre back, starting at the marker and sewing each side in the opposite direction; they should ruffle a little. Then sew the sides of the strip together in the middle of the top and at each side.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The turban is. The black knitted top and the black polo neck are not. The first photo is the pattern’s cover; the front and back views are from Ístex’s photos for the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the size, materials, gauge, the instructions, the finishing and two close-up photos of the knitting; a blank page; and Ístex’s back cover.
