Good to know

Ása — your questions, answered

Why are four colours different from the pattern?
Light red (1408), orange (1410), sun yellow (1411) and lilac (1413) are no longer made. This kit has crimson red (9434) in place of light red — colour D: the red tops of the big hearts above the hem, on the cuffs and round the yoke, and small red motifs in the bands. Crimson red is the same red hue but much deeper and darker than the bright coral-red hearts in the photo, so your hearts will be a deep cherry red. Apricot (1704) is in place of orange — colour E: orange chevrons and small motifs. Apricot is a clearly darker, browner ginger orange than the bright orange in the photo. Mimosa (1703) is in place of sun yellow — colour F: the yellow chevrons and motifs. Mimosa is a stronger, more golden yellow than the soft yellow in the photo. Milkyway (1702) is in place of lilac — colour B: the round and zigzag along the hem, lilac chevrons and motifs in the bands, and two rows of small motifs on the yoke. Milkyway is a pale lavender-blue — paler and clearly bluer than the mauve lilac in the photo. The white and the other four colours are the pattern’s own. On the white ground all four replacements stand out clearly, but the cardigan will look bolder and less pastel than in the photo (our comparison). You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — 6, 8 and 10 years — with a chest of 78, 84 and 89 cm, 36 to 41 cm from the hem to the underarm and sleeves of 33 to 38 cm. The hood is 27 (28) 28 cm long before it is folded and grafted at the top.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for 10 years: 8 balls of white and one each of milkyway, pink heather, crimson red, apricot, mimosa, glacier blue, heaven blue heather and spring green heather — 16 balls. Size 6 uses 6 balls of white (14 in all) and size 8 uses 7 (15). The eight motif colours go only into the motifs, so expect some of each of those balls to be left over (our estimate). The pattern calls pink heather, heaven blue heather and spring green heather simply pink, heaven blue and spring green.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purl stitch at the beginning and end of each round, at the centre front. At the end you sew twice into each chain of purl stitches by machine with small straight stitches and cut between the sewn rows.
How are the front bands made?
The 5 moss stitches at each end of the hem wait on holders. After the front is machine-sewn — it is cut once both bands are knitted — each band is knitted from them on a 3.5 mm needle, with 3 stitches cast on for a facing: the band is moss stitch, the facing stocking stitch. When the band, slightly stretched, reaches the neck, it is sewn on and the facing hides the machine stitching on the inside. The left band holds the buttons; the right band has 6 buttonholes, and the 7th is in the moss-stitch neckband. The buttons are not included; the pattern gives no size.
How is the hood made?
Straight on from the neckband, back and forth on 4.5 mm needles in white: 13 stitches are increased across the first row, the 5 moss stitches of each band carry on up the hood edges, and when the hood measures 27 (28) 28 cm it is folded in half and the top is grafted.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. The buttonhole reads “K1, P1, K2 tog, work till end of row. Work next row in moss st and cast on 1 st in place of the cast off on previous row” — but a k2tog alone makes no hole, and nothing is cast off. Our reading: on the right-side row work K1, P1, cast off 1 stitch (or work k2tog, yarn over) and work to the end; on the next row cast on 1 stitch over the gap (or work the yarn over as a stitch). In size 8 the sleeve chart is labelled 83 rounds, but its size-8 lines skip rounds 45–52, which leaves 79 — with the 5 moss-stitch rounds that is about 35 cm, the printed sleeve length (our calculation). So 79 is right and 83 looks like a misprint (our reading): knit the chart as marked, to 35 cm. The yoke says to change to shorter needles as the rounds get tighter, but no shorter circular is listed; the 4.5 mm double-pointed needles will do (our suggestion). The hood instructions say “sweater” for the cardigan, and the stitch holders are not in the materials list.
Is the dark cardigan in the photo sold too?
No. The burgundy version — dark wine with a lilac hood, on the girl on the left — is not sold as a kit. Its dark wine ground and its lilac hood are no longer made, and the replacement crimson red and apricot are so much darker than the originals that the red tops of the big hearts and the orange motifs would barely stand out on a dark ground (our judgement). This kit is the white version, on the girl on the right.
What does the kit with needles include?
3.5 mm (US 4) and 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 60 cm; 3.5 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern gives the circulars as 60–80 cm; the kit has 60 cm. The buttons are not included.
