Good to know

Ása — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
White (0051), pink (1412), glacier blue (1404), heaven blue (1402) and spring green (1406) are still made by Ístex. Lilac (1413), light red (1408), orange (1410) and sun yellow (1411) are not, and neither is dark wine (9417), the burgundy version’s ground. Our white kit uses crimson red (9434) for light red — the same red hue but much deeper and darker than the bright coral-red in the photo, so the red tops of the big hearts come out a deep cherry red; apricot (1704) for orange — a clearly darker, browner ginger orange; mimosa (1703) for sun yellow — a stronger, more golden yellow; and milkyway (1702) for lilac — a pale lavender-blue, paler and clearly bluer than the mauve lilac in the photo. We have no kit for the burgundy version: five of its nine colours are no longer made, among them its dark wine ground and its lilac hood. Our shop calls 1412, 1402 and 1406 pink heather, heaven blue heather and spring green heather, so go by the colour numbers.
Which size should I knit?
Three sizes — 6, 8 and 10 years — with a chest of 78, 84 and 89 cm all the way round, 36, 38 and 41 cm from the hem to the underarm, and sleeves of 33, 35 and 38 cm. The hood is 27 (28, 28) cm long before it is folded and grafted at the top.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. White version: white (A) 6 (7, 8) and one ball each of the eight motif colours — 14 (15, 16) balls. Burgundy version: dark wine (A) 5 (6, 7), lilac (B) 2 — it is also the hood — and one ball each of the seven other motif colours — 14 (15, 16) balls.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes. The body is knitted in the round with a purl stitch at the beginning and end of each round, at the centre front. At the end you sew twice into each chain of purl stitches by machine with small straight stitches and cut between the sewn rows.
How are the front bands made?
The 5 moss stitches at each end of the hem wait on holders. After the front is machine-sewn — it is cut once both bands are knitted — each band is knitted from them on a 3.5 mm needle, with 3 stitches cast on for a facing: the band is moss stitch, the facing stocking stitch. When the band, slightly stretched, reaches the neck, it is sewn on and the facing hides the machine stitching on the inside. The left band holds the buttons; the right band has 6 buttonholes, and the 7th is in the moss-stitch neckband. The pattern gives no button size.
How is the hood made?
Straight on from the neckband, back and forth on 4.5 mm needles — in white (A) for the white version, in lilac (B) for the burgundy one. 13 stitches are increased across the first row, the 5 moss stitches of each band carry on up the hood edges, and when the hood measures 27 (28, 28) cm it is folded in half and the top is grafted.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things. The buttonhole reads “K1, P1, K2 tog, work till end of row. Work next row in moss st and cast on 1 st in place of the cast off on previous row” — but a k2tog alone makes no hole, and nothing is cast off. Our reading: on the right-side row work K1, P1, cast off 1 stitch (or work k2tog, yarn over) and work to the end; on the next row cast on 1 stitch over the gap (or work the yarn over as a stitch). In size 8 the sleeve chart is labelled 83 rounds, but its size-8 lines skip rounds 45–52, which leaves 79 — with the 5 moss-stitch rounds that is about 35 cm, the printed sleeve length (our calculation). So 79 is right and 83 looks like a misprint (our reading): knit the chart as marked, to 35 cm. The hood instructions say “sweater” for the cardigan, and the stitch holders are not in the materials list.
Is everything in the photos part of the pattern?
The two cardigans are — burgundy on the girl on the left of the cover, white on the girl on the right; the last page has a second photo of the burgundy version. The yellow top under the burgundy cardigan, the hair tie, the denim skirt, the pink tights, the boots, the jeans and the trainers are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 5 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the sizes, the materials for both versions, the gauge, the body chart and the colour key; a page with the sleeve chart and the body and sleeve instructions; a page with the yoke chart, the yoke, the finishing, the front bands, the neckband and the hood; and a last page with a photo of the burgundy version and Ístex’s address.
