Good to know

Rós — your questions, answered

Why is one colour different from the pattern?
Lilac (1413) is no longer made, and Léttlopi has no lilac today. This kit has milkyway (1702) in its place — colour D: the roses in the bands at the hem and round the yoke, and the scalloped rounds where white meets violet — at the top of the hem band, above the cuffs and at the foot of the yoke. Milkyway is a light lavender blue: paler and clearly bluer than the mauve lilac roses in the photo, so your roses will look blue-lavender rather than pinkish lilac. The purple Knúpur kit has the same replacement, so the doll and the child still match. You can choose another shade in the colour picker — pink heather (1412) is a warmer, pinker choice (our suggestion).
What size doll does it fit?
The pattern says a 46 cm doll — the common 18-inch size; the dolls in the photos are of that kind. The sweater has a 39 cm chest, is 15 cm from the picot edge to the underarm and has 11 cm sleeves. On both dolls in the photos it comes down over the hips, like a short dress. Measure your doll before you start (our suggestion). It is not a size for a child.
Will I have yarn left over?
Yes, most of it. The pattern lists 1 ball of each of the four colours, and the kit has exactly that — 4 balls, 200 g. A doll’s sweater uses far less: by our estimate roughly 15 to 25 g of the main colour and a few grams of each of the others, so most of every ball will be left over.
How does it go over the doll’s head?
After round 9 of the yoke chart the yoke is knitted back and forth instead of in the round, so it opens at the left back, where the round begins. The white neckband is knitted back and forth too. Two small button loops on the left side of the neckband and the yoke close it. The pattern doesn’t say how to make the loops — a short crochet chain or a few stitches sewn over with yarn both work (our suggestion). The buttons are not included.
How do the picot edges work?
At the hem, the cuffs and the neck, a round (or row) of K2tog, yarn over is knitted between a few rounds of white stocking stitch. At the end each edge is folded to the inside along that round and stitched in place, and the little holes become a scalloped edge.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The sleeve increases — “1 st after first st and 1 st before last st of rnd, in every 4th rnd, 3 times” — take 20 stitches to the printed 23 only if you add one stitch each time: after the first stitch, then before the last, then after the first again (our reading). “Cast on 20 sts with B using 4 dpns” means the 4 mm double-pointed needles. The body is only 70 stitches, which is tight on a 40 cm circular, especially on the 4 mm hem; if it won’t stretch round, use double-pointed needles or a longer circular with the magic-loop method (our suggestion). On row 11 of the yoke chart only 15 stitches are decreased, not 16, as drawn; the printed 49 stitches is right. The neckband needle size is not given; use 4.5 mm, or 4 mm for a firmer edge (our suggestion).
Is there a matching sweater for a child?
Yes — Knúpur, a round-yoke cardigan for ages 1 to 4 from the same book (Lopi 29), with the same little roses. The girl in the first photo wears the purple one. We sell it as a separate kit, and the purple Knúpur kit also has milkyway in place of lilac.
Which photo shows this version?
Both. In the first photo the doll in the purple sweater is held by a girl in the purple Knúpur cardigan; in the second, the purple doll sweater is at the back of the pink cradle. Both show the original lilac roses. The red doll sweater in front of it is the red version, sold as a separate kit. The cradle, the girl’s dress and the dolls’ tights and boots are not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
4 mm (US 6) and 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 cm; 4 mm and 4.5 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 2 small buttons are not included.
