The girl wears Knúpur, a separate pattern; her beige dress, white tights and pink shoes and the doll’s tights and boots are not part of the pattern

Rós — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Red version: crimson (9434), white (0051) and spring green (1406) are still made by Ístex; light red (1408) is not. Purple version: violet (1414), white and spring green are still made; lilac (1413) is not. In both the missing colour is D: the roses in the bands at the hem and round the yoke, and the scalloped rounds where white meets the main colour — at the top of the hem band, above the cuffs and at the foot of the yoke. Our red kit uses 1412 pink heather for light red — crimson red, the usual replacement, is already the red version’s main colour — so its roses are pink rather than the soft coral red in the photo, and a little lighter. Our purple kit uses 1702 milkyway for lilac, a light lavender blue, paler and clearly bluer than the mauve lilac roses in the photos. Our shop calls 9434, 1414 and 1406 crimson red, violet heather and spring green heather, so go by the colour numbers.
What size doll does it fit?
The pattern says a 46 cm doll — the common 18-inch size; the dolls in the photos are of that kind. The sweater has a 39 cm chest, is 15 cm from the picot edge to the underarm and has 11 cm sleeves. On the dolls in the photos it comes down over the hips, like a short dress. Measure your doll before you start (our suggestion). It is not a size for a child.
How much yarn do I need?
The pattern lists one 50 g ball of Léttlopi of each of the four colours, for either version — 4 balls. A doll’s sweater uses far less: by our estimate roughly 20 to 30 g of the main colour, 15 to 25 g of white — the folded hems and the neckband are white — and under 10 g each of spring green and colour D, so one ball of each is plenty.
How does it go over the doll’s head?
After round 9 of the yoke chart the yoke is knitted back and forth instead of in the round, so it opens at the left back, where the round begins. The white neckband is knitted back and forth too. Two small button loops on the left side of the neckband and the yoke close it. The pattern doesn’t say how to make the loops — a short crochet chain or a few stitches sewn over with yarn both work (our suggestion).
How do the picot edges work?
At the hem, the cuffs and the neck, a round (or row) of K2tog, yarn over is knitted between a few rounds of white stocking stitch. At the end each edge is folded to the inside along that round and stitched in place, and the little holes become a scalloped edge.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. The sleeve increases — “1 st after first st and 1 st before last st of rnd, in every 4th rnd, 3 times” — take 20 stitches to the printed 23 only if you add one stitch each time: after the first stitch, then before the last, then after the first again (our reading). “Cast on 20 sts with B using 4 dpns” means the 4 mm double-pointed needles (our reading). The body is only 70 stitches, which is tight on a 40 cm circular, especially on the 4 mm hem; if it won’t stretch round, use double-pointed needles or a longer circular with the magic-loop method (our suggestion). On row 11 of the yoke chart the drawing is uneven: the marked repeat shows a decrease, but the printed count, 49 stitches, means 15 decreases, not 16. Leave out one decrease in that row so the counts match the printed 49 and 33 (our reading). The neckband needle size is not given; use 4.5 mm, or 4 mm for a firmer edge (our suggestion).
Is there a matching sweater for a child?
The cover photo shows the purple doll sweater with Knúpur, Védís Jónsdóttir’s round-yoke cardigan for ages 1 to 4 from the same book (Lopi 29 no. 4) — a separate pattern. The purple versions use the same four colours. The red versions differ: the red Knúpur has a garnet red body, this red doll sweater a crimson one.
Which photo shows which version?
The cover photo shows the purple version on a doll held by a girl in the purple Knúpur cardigan. In the photo of two dolls in a pink cradle, the doll in front wears the red version and the doll behind it the purple. Both are in the pattern’s original colours. The cradle, the girl’s dress, tights and shoes, the white clothes under the red sweater, and the dolls’ tights and boots are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; one page with a small photo, the materials for both versions, the size, the gauge, all the instructions, the three charts and the colour key; a blank page; and Ístex’s back cover.
