Rjúpa — the rock ptarmigan. Védís Jónsdóttir’s collar from Ístex’s Lopi 26: a round colourwork piece that sits over the shoulders, in zigzag bands of light beige and acorn with white crosses on black, rising to a white eyelet-lace turtleneck, tied at the neck with a ribbon through an eyelet round.

How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the shoulders up to the neck. 192 stitches are cast on in black on 4 mm and knitted back and forth for 6 rows of garter stitch, then joined. On 4.5 mm the colourwork chart — light beige and acorn zigzags, white crosses on a black band — decreases in four steps to 64 stitches, with an eyelet round for the ribbon near the top. The work is then turned and the white collar is knitted in eyelet lace, increased to 72 stitches, with a second eyelet round near the top, and cast off very loosely. The short garter-stitch opening at the start is sewn together.

How much yarn does it take?

The pattern lists the four colours but no amounts. By our count from the stitches, each colour needs less than one 50 g ball — black, the most used, a little over half a ball. The kit has one ball of each colour.

What size is it?

One size, given as a women’s size; the pattern gives no measurements. It is cast on with 192 stitches at the shoulders and narrows to 64 at the neck, at 18 stitches to 10 cm.

What do I tie it with?

A silk ribbon threaded through the eyelets at the base of the white collar — the photo shows a narrow black one tied in a bow. The pattern gives no length, and says you can make a cord from the black yarn instead. The ribbon is not included.

The pattern says “warp stitch” — what is that?

A misprint for wrap stitch. When you turn the work before the lace collar, slip the first stitch back to the left needle, bring the yarn between the needles to the back and return the stitch, so no hole forms.

What does the kit with needles include?

4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; a 4 mm (US 6) circular needle in 60 cm — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The ribbon is not included.
