Good to know

Opus — your questions, answered

Why are five colours different from the pattern?
Ultra violet (9705), sunshine yellow (0017), orange rust (9988), orchid (0159) and lake blue (9982) are no longer made. Each is used for dots on the front and for one or two stripes on the back. This kit has: space blue (1233) in place of ultra violet — colour B: 4 dots and the first 8-row stripe on the back. In the photo those dots are a soft, greyish violet; space blue is a strong royal blue, so they will be clearly blue, not violet. The Álafosslopi purples made today are much darker and would barely show on the navy. Golden heather (9964) in place of sunshine yellow — colour D: 6 dots and two back stripes (2 and 9 rows). It is clearly deeper — a mustard gold rather than the pale buttery yellow in the photo. Amber heather (9971) in place of orange rust — colour F: 3 dots and the last 10-row stripe. It is close to the warm orange in the photo, a touch browner, with small flecks. Winter morning (1239) in place of orchid — colour G: 4 dots and a 9-row stripe. It is clearly paler — a light pink rather than the dusty rose in the photo. Light indigo (9958) in place of lake blue — colour H: 3 dots and a 9-row stripe. It is clearly greyer and duller — a soft grey-blue rather than the clear mid blue in the photo. The midnight blue ground (0709), happy red (0047) and apple green (9983) are the pattern’s own colours. So your cushion will still have bright dots on navy and a striped back, but with two different blues, a deeper yellow and a paler pink. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
How big is it?
The cover is for a 40 × 40 cm cushion pad. The pattern prints the size as “80 × 40 cm”; by our reading that is the two pieces side by side. Each piece is 54 stitches and 74 rows — about 41 × 41 cm at the pattern’s gauge (our calculation) — so the cover fits the pad snugly. The pad is not included.
Will I have yarn left over?
Yes. The kit holds the 9 balls the pattern calls for: 2 of midnight blue and one each of the seven other colours. Each of those is used for only 3 to 6 dots and one or two stripes — roughly 30 to 40 g of each 100 g ball, by our estimate — so most of every one will be left over.
How are the dots knitted?
In intarsia, on the front only: each dot is knitted with its own length of yarn (or a small bobbin), and where two colours meet the yarns are twisted round each other so no holes form. The chart shows every dot stitch by stitch. The pattern says to see page 2 for the intarsia technique, but page 2 holds the chart — the leaflet has no intarsia instructions. With 28 dots there are many ends to weave in, at least two for each dot. If you haven’t knitted intarsia before, try one dot on a small swatch first (our suggestion).
Can I take the cover off?
Not as written. The pieces are sewn together with wrong sides facing at the sides and the bottom, the pad goes in, and the top opening is sewn shut. The pattern has no zip or buttons.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Two small things. The size is printed as “80 × 40 cm” (see above). And only the back says “cast off”; cast the front off in the same way after its 74 rows (our reading).
What does the kit with needles include?
A 6 mm (US 10) circular needle in 60 cm, used back and forth — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern asks for straight 6 mm needles; the circular does the same job, and the 54 stitches fit easily (our choice). The cushion pad is not included.
