Good to know

Opus — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Three of the eight are still made by Ístex: midnight blue (0709), the ground of the front, happy red (0047) and apple green (9983). Ultra violet (9705), sunshine yellow (0017), orange rust (9988), orchid (0159) and lake blue (9982) are no longer made. Our Opus kit uses space blue (1233) for ultra violet — a strong royal blue, so those dots come out clearly blue, not violet; the Álafosslopi purples made today are much darker and would barely show on the navy. It uses golden heather (9964) for sunshine yellow — clearly deeper, a mustard gold rather than the pale buttery yellow in the photo; amber heather (9971) for orange rust — close to the warm orange in the photo, a touch browner, with small flecks; winter morning (1239) for orchid — clearly paler, a light pink rather than the dusty rose; and light indigo (9958) for lake blue — clearly greyer and duller, a soft grey-blue rather than the clear mid blue. You can also knit it in any eight Álafosslopi colours; the amounts stay the same.
How big is it?
The cover is for a 40 × 40 cm cushion pad. The pattern prints the size as “80 × 40 cm”; by our reading that is the two pieces side by side. Each piece is 54 stitches and 74 rows — about 41 × 41 cm at the pattern’s gauge (our calculation) — so the cover fits the pad snugly. The pad is not included.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls: 2 of midnight blue (A) and one ball each of the seven other colours, B to H — 9 balls. Each of the seven goes into only 3 to 6 dots and one or two stripes on the back, so much of each of those balls will be left over (our estimate).
How are the dots knitted?
In intarsia, on the front only: each dot is knitted with its own length of yarn (or a small bobbin), and where two colours meet the yarns are twisted round each other so no holes form. The chart shows every dot stitch by stitch. The pattern says to see page 2 for the intarsia technique, but page 2 holds the chart — the leaflet has no intarsia instructions. With 28 dots there are many ends to weave in, at least two for each dot. If you haven’t knitted intarsia before, try one dot on a small swatch first (our suggestion).
Can I take the cover off?
Not as written. The pieces are sewn together with wrong sides facing at the sides and the bottom, the pad goes in, and the top opening is sewn shut. The pattern has no zip or buttons.
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
Two small things. The size is printed as “80 × 40 cm” (see above). And only the back says “cast off”; cast the front off in the same way after its 74 rows (our reading). The materials list also leaves out a tapestry needle.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with a small photo, the materials, the gauge, the front and its dot chart, a page with the back, the finishing, the colour key and the stripe chart, and Ístex’s back cover.
