Knitted in Iceland

Icelandic Blanket - Blue with horses

Kidka “Fákur” horse blanket in blue · knitted in Iceland from Icelandic wool · about 140 × 200 cm

Sale price$345.00

The one to choose for a blue or white bedroom: navy with the horses picked out in white and sky blue, and a pale blue second side for summer. One reviewer bought it for a friend and then wanted one herself.

What you get with the blue Fákur

  • Icelandic horses in white and light blue, row after row across a navy ground, knitted in rather than printed
  • Turn it over for the lighter look: pale blue with the horses in navy
  • Washed, brushed and steamed after knitting, so it is soft to the hand from day one
  • About 140 × 200 cm (55 × 79 in): covers a single bed, or two people on a sofa

Icelandic wool blanket in a living room

Icelandic wool, designed in Iceland

The blanket Icelanders reach for

Light on the lap and properly warm, because Icelandic wool has two layers: long outer fibres that shrug off damp, soft inner fibres that hold the heat. Air it out rather than wash it, and it lasts for years.

Why you'll love it

  • Knitted where the wool comes fromKidka knits and sews this blanket in its own factory in Hvammstangi, North-West Iceland, from Icelandic wool spun and dyed in Iceland. In Kidka's words, the wool never leaves the country.
  • Forty years at the knitting machinesKidka calls itself one of Iceland's leading knitting factories, with more than 40 years of experience, and says knitwear made entirely in Iceland has become rare.
  • Warm without the weightIcelandic fleece has a fine, soft inner layer that holds heat and long outer fibres that shed damp. The blanket is light to lift and warm within minutes.
  • For the horse person in the familyRiders and owners of Icelandic horses recognise the breed at once; everyone else sees a handsome blue blanket. The same horses are also knitted in black and in beige.

Questions people ask before they buy

Which blue is it?
A deep navy on the face, with the horses in white and a lighter sky blue. The back is the opposite: a pale, slightly flecked blue with the horses in navy. Neither side is a bright royal blue.
Does the back look different?
Only in colour. The horses come through on the back as a negative of the front, so you can use either side as the top. Our close-up photo shows the two sides at the edge.
Will it cover a double bed?
Kidka gives the size as 140 × 200 cm, about 55 × 79 inches. That is a full cover for a single bed, as in our photo. On a double or queen it lies across the lower half as a throw rather than reaching the floor on both sides.
Is it soft?
Softer than people expect from Icelandic wool. Kidka washes, brushes and steams every blanket after knitting, which raises a light nap on the surface. One reviewer's first words were “very soft”. It is still a wool blanket, at its best over the duvet or on the sofa.
How do I wash it?
Rarely: Kidka's own advice is that an airing is usually enough. When it needs more, hand wash in lukewarm water with wool detergent, or use a wool programme at no more than 30 °C, and dry it flat. Never the tumble dryer.
