Icelandic Blanket - Blue with puffins

Kidka “Lundi” puffin blanket in blue-grey · knitted in Iceland from Icelandic wool · about 140 × 200 cm

Sale price$329.00

For someone who came home from Iceland still talking about the puffins. One reviewer saw this blanket on her trip, left without it, and ordered it from us the following year; others bought it for a wife, a daughter and a grandson.

What you get with the blue Lundi

  • Rows of puffins in white, black and red, knitted into the wool rather than printed on it
  • A slate blue-grey ground that reads as blue in daylight and grey in the evening
  • Washed, brushed and steamed at the factory, so the surface is soft and a little fluffy from the first evening
  • About 140 × 200 cm (55 × 79 in): two people on a sofa, or a single bed from pillow to foot

Icelandic wool blanket in a living room

Icelandic wool, designed in Iceland

The blanket Icelanders reach for

Light on the lap and properly warm, because Icelandic wool has two layers: long outer fibres that shrug off damp, soft inner fibres that hold the heat. Air it out rather than wash it, and it lasts for years.

Why you'll love it

  • Made where it says it is madeKidka designs, knits and sews this blanket in its own factory in Hvammstangi, five minutes off Road 1 in North Iceland. In Kidka's words, the wool never leaves the country during production.
  • Icelandic wool, spun and dyed in IcelandThe yarn is Icelandic sheep's wool, spun and coloured in Iceland before it reaches Kidka's knitting machines.
  • More than 40 years of knittingKidka describes itself as one of Iceland's leading knitting factories, with over 40 years of experience, and says knitwear made entirely in Iceland has become rare.
  • A gift with a track recordReviewers bought this blue blanket for a wife's birthday, a daughter, a grandson in Australia and a friend who fell in love with Iceland's puffins.

Questions people ask before they buy

Are the puffins on both sides?
No. They are knitted into the front. On the back the same blue, red, white and black yarns run as rows of stripes, which looks tidy when a corner folds back on the sofa. The close-up photo shows both sides.
Is it blue or grey?
A slate blue-grey: clearly blue next to a white sheet, more grey on a dark sofa. The birds are white and black with red beaks and feet. Kidka knits the same puffins on an oatmeal beige if you want something lighter.
How does it feel?
Soft and a little fuzzy on the surface, because Kidka washes, brushes and steams every piece after knitting. Under that it is Icelandic wool: springy, light for its size and warm within minutes. Reviewers call it well made and warm.
Will it cover a bed?
Kidka gives the size as 140 × 200 cm, about 55 × 79 inches. In our photo it covers a single bed from the pillows to the foot. On a double it works as a throw across the lower half, not as a full bedspread.
Can it go in the washing machine?
Kidka says yes: a wool programme at no more than 30 °C with wool detergent, dried flat afterwards and never in a tumble dryer. Most of the time an airing outdoors is all it needs.
