Icelandic Wool Blanket - Black with horses

Kidka “Fákur” horse blanket in black · knitted in Iceland from Icelandic wool · about 140 × 200 cm

Sale price$345.00

For a room that runs to dark wood, leather or stone: rows of white Icelandic horses on a charcoal ground, and a grey second side with the horses in black when you want the lighter look.

What you get with the black Fákur

  • Icelandic horses mid-stride, row after row, knitted into the wool rather than printed on it
  • Two blankets in one: charcoal with white horses on the face, soft grey with dark horses on the back
  • Washed, brushed and steamed at the factory, so the surface is soft and a little fluffy from the first evening
  • About 140 × 200 cm (55 × 79 in): the whole of a single bed, or two people side by side on a sofa

Icelandic wool blanket in a living room

Icelandic wool, designed in Iceland

The blanket Icelanders reach for

Light on the lap and properly warm, because Icelandic wool has two layers: long outer fibres that shrug off damp, soft inner fibres that hold the heat. Air it out rather than wash it, and it lasts for years.

Why you'll love it

  • Made in a factory you can visitKidka knits and sews in its own factory in Hvammstangi, five minutes off Road 1 in North Iceland, with a shop at the front where visitors watch the machines through the window.
  • Wool that never leaves IcelandThe yarn is Icelandic sheep's wool, spun and dyed in Iceland, and Kidka says its wool products stay in the country through the whole production process.
  • The horse Iceland is known forSmall, sure-footed and famous for the tölt, the Icelandic horse has been bred on the island since the settlement. Kidka's Fákur pattern shows it the way you see it in a field: moving.
  • A souvenir that gets usedOne reviewer calls it an authentic reminder of a summer trip to Iceland; another came back and bought a second. Also knitted in beige and in blue if black is too dark for the room.

Questions people ask before they buy

Is it black or grey?
Both, depending on which side is up. The face is a deep charcoal black with the horses in white; turn it over and the ground is a soft light grey with the horses in black. The close-up photo shows the two sides meeting at the edge.
Is the pattern the same on both sides?
Yes. The Fákur blanket is knitted so that the horses come through on the back as a negative of the front. There is no plain side and no stripes, which is what makes it different from Kidka's puffin blankets.
How big is it, really?
Kidka gives the size as 140 × 200 cm, about 55 × 79 inches. In our photo it covers a single bed from the pillows to the foot and hangs over the sides. On a double bed it works as a throw across the lower half.
What does the wool feel like?
Lofty and a little hairy on the surface, because Kidka brushes every blanket after knitting. Under that it is Icelandic wool: light for its size, warm the moment it is over you, and nicer every winter. Most people keep it over the duvet or on the sofa.
Can I put it in the washing machine?
Kidka says yes: a wool programme at no more than 30 °C with a wool detergent, then dried flat and never tumble-dried. Most of the time an airing outdoors is all it needs.
