Good to know

Haddur — your questions, answered

Why are two colours different from the pattern?
Sapphire blue (9968) and monet blue tweed (9735) are no longer made. This kit has navy (0118) in place of sapphire blue — the hat’s colour
What size is it?
One size, printed as 116–134 — the heights in cm of the jacket’s three sizes, so roughly 5 to 9 years (our reading). The pattern gives no measurements; by our calculation it is about 40 cm (15¾″) round before stretching, and brioche stretches a lot.
Will I have yarn left over?
Yes — a lot. The pattern says the hat takes less than one ball of each colour. Álafosslopi comes in 100 g balls and the hat uses all five colours, so the kit has one ball of each — navy, ruby red heather, blue tweed, amber heather and golden heather, 500 g in all. By our rough estimate the hat uses only about 100 to 150 g altogether — less than half of any ball — so most of all five balls will be left over.
How is brioche knitted?
Back and forth on 48 stitches. Row 1: *k1, yarn over, slip the next stitch purlwise*. Every row after that: *knit the slipped stitch together with its yarn over, yarn over, slip the next stitch purlwise*. It makes a deep, double-thick rib. The hat is seamed up the side edges at the end.
Which colour is the pompom?
The pattern doesn’t say. On the burgundy hat the pompom is orchid, the hat’s colour C; on the blue hat it is blue — so in this kit, blue tweed, colour C (our reading). Any of the five colours will do. Draw a ring 8 cm across with a 2 cm hole in the middle on double-thick cardboard. The pattern refers to “page 3” for more on pompoms, but page 3 of this leaflet is the jacket pattern — it most likely means a page in the Lopi 24 book the pattern comes from (our reading).
Is the jacket in the photos included?
No. The zip jacket is Hlökk, in the same Ístex leaflet, and it is sold as a separate kit in this blue version, with the same two replacement colours.
Which photo shows this version?
The first photo — the boy by the sea, in the original colours (see above). The second photo shows the burgundy version, which is not sold as a kit: four of its five colours are no longer made.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 6 mm (US 10) circular needle in 60 cm — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern gives no length; the hat is knitted back and forth on it, so 60 cm is our choice. The cardboard for the pompom is not included.
