Why you'll love it

  • Colour blocksA yoke and shoulders, a body, sleeves, a band and a rib — each a wide block of its own colour.
  • From the neck downThe back yoke is cast on at the neck, the fronts hang from the shoulders, and the sleeves are picked up round the armholes.
  • A ridge at every colourEach block is cast off and the next one picked up behind it, so a small ridge marks every colour change.
  • Matching hatHaddur is a brioche hat in the jacket’s five colours, in wide and narrow stripes, with a pompom.
  • Two colourwaysBlue — monet blue tweed, sapphire blue, ruby red, golden and amber — or burgundy: orchid, burgundy, soft purple, ochre and orange rust.

Good to know

Hlökk & Haddur — your questions, answered

What is in the leaflet?
Two children’s patterns by Védís Jónsdóttir from Ístex’s Lopi 24: No. 7, Hlökk, a zip jacket in sizes 116, 128 and 134, and No. 8, Haddur, a striped brioche hat in one size, 116–134. Each has its own materials list and is given in two colour versions, blue and burgundy, with the same five colours for the jacket and the hat. The hat’s list letters them differently: hat A is the jacket’s B, hat B the jacket’s C, hat C the jacket’s A, hat D the jacket’s E and hat E the jacket’s D.
Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
Blue version: ruby red heather (9962), golden heather (9964) and amber heather (9971) are still made by Ístex; monet blue tweed (9735) and sapphire blue (9968) are no longer made. Our blue jacket and hat kits use 1234 blue tweed for monet blue tweed — a mid-blue with white flecks like the yoke in the photo, but a clearer, brighter blue — and 0118 navy for sapphire blue, a very dark blue. In the photo the jacket body already looks dark navy, but on the hat, which catches more sun, the sapphire shows as a clear mid-blue, so a navy body or hat will look darker and duller than the original (our comparison). Burgundy version: only soft purple (0163) is still made — our shop calls it dark soft purple; orchid (0159), burgundy (9210), ochre (0065) and orange rust (9988) are no longer made, and there is no kit for the burgundy version.
Which size should I knit?
The jacket has three sizes — 116, 128 and 134 — European children’s sizes named after the child’s height in cm; by our reading roughly 6 to 9 years. The chest is 80, 86 and 92 cm (the pattern calls it “width”), the length from the shoulder 45, 50 and 54 cm and the sleeve 33, 37 and 40½ cm. The body’s 104 (112, 120) stitches come to the printed width at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so it is the chest all the way round. The shoulders are dropped: the sleeves are picked up straight round the armholes. The hat is one size, printed as 116–134; it gives no measurements, and by our calculation its 48 stitches come to about 40 cm round before stretching — brioche stretches a lot.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. The jacket takes the same in both versions: A 1 (1, 2), B 2 (2, 3), C 1 (1, 2), D 1 and E 1 — 6 balls for 116 and 128, 9 for 134. For the hat the pattern says only that it takes less than one ball of each of its five colours.
How do the jacket’s colour blocks join?
At the end of each block the stitches are cast off from the right side, and the next colour is picked up behind the cast-off edge — in the tops of the purl stitches of the row before. The cast-off edge stays on the outside as a small ridge, so every colour change is marked by a line. The body is knitted back and forth, with 3 moss stitches at each front edge; the sleeves are knitted in the round down to the cuff.
How is the hat knitted?
Back and forth in brioche on 48 stitches. Row 1: *knit 1, yarn over, slip the next stitch purlwise*. Every row after that: *knit the slipped stitch together with its yarn over, yarn over, slip the next stitch purlwise*. It makes a deep, double-thick rib. The stripes are 14 rows of A, 10 of B, 8 of C, 4 of A, 6 of D, 6 of E and 10 of B, in the hat’s own letters. The pattern does not say which colour the pompom is; in the photos it matches hat colour C — orchid on the burgundy hat, blue on the blue one (our reading).
What zip do I need?
An open-ended (separating) zip, sewn to the front edges with thread in a similar colour; its top end is hidden inside the folded collar. The pattern lists one 45 (55) 60 cm long. Measure the front edge of your finished jacket, from the hem to the top of the collar, before you buy it (our suggestion).
Is anything unclear in the pattern?
A few things, by our reading. The fronts: “Pick up stitches at the cast off edge” must mean the cast-on edge of the back — its top edge, at the neck and shoulders. Each front is picked up at one end of it, at the shoulder, and knitted down; the cast-off edge is the bottom of the yoke, where the body is picked up later. The right front: its steps cast on 1, 1, 1, 3 and 4 (5) 5 stitches, which makes 25 (27) 29 stitches, not the printed 24 (26) 28, and 2 rows more than the left front. The chart shapes the right front like the left one — 1, 1, 3 and 4 (5) 5 stitches — so leave out one of the single cast-ons and its 2 rows; the body pick-up needs 24 (26) 28 stitches on each front. The sleeves: “dec 1 stitch in the beg and end of 3rd, 9th, 10th and 16th rnd” lists all the sizes together. The stitch counts and the sleeve chart give two decrease rounds in sizes 116 and 134 and one in size 128: the chart steps in at its rows 5 and 11 in size 116, row 10 in size 128 and rows 11 and 17 in size 134 — its row 1 is the pick-up round, so these are knitted rounds 4 and 10, round 9, and rounds 10 and 16. The next colour is then picked up behind the cast-off edge (the text says cast-on); in size 128 it takes 42 stitches from an edge of 44, so pick up 2 fewer, spread evenly (our suggestion). The pattern gives no needle lengths, and it calls the jacket a sweater in places. In the hat, “page 3” for more on pompoms is not in this leaflet — page 3 is the jacket pattern — so it most likely means a page in the Lopi 24 book.
Which photo shows which version?
The first photo — the boy on the rocks by the sea, the full-page photo on page 5 of the leaflet — shows the blue jacket and hat in their original colours; his turtleneck and trousers are not part of the pattern. The second — the girl by a turquoise door, the leaflet’s cover — shows the burgundy jacket and hat; her jeans are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo (burgundy), a page with a small photo, Hlökk’s materials for both versions, sizes, tension, the back, the left front and the body chart with its key, a page with the right front, body, sleeves, neckband, finishing and the sleeve chart, a page with a small photo and all of Haddur, a full-page photo of the blue jacket and hat, and Ístex’s back cover.
