Doppa — your questions, answered

Why are three colours different from the pattern?
Mustard (9264), orange (1410) and lilac (1413) are no longer made. This kit has one ball of a replacement for each: mimosa (1703) in place of mustard — colour C, the small flowers at the top of each band of dots; apricot (1704) in place of orange — colour D, the squares with garnet centres; and milkyway (1702) in place of lilac — colour G, the big dots with violet centres, the motif you see most. Mimosa is a clearly brighter, stronger golden yellow than the soft, muted mustard in the photo, so the small flowers will stand out more against the black. Apricot is a ginger orange — clearly browner, more golden and less vivid than the bright red-orange squares in the photo, so the squares will look more muted. Milkyway is a little lighter than the lilac and clearly bluer, a pale periwinkle blue, so the big dots will read light blue rather than lilac around their violet centres. The chart key draws colour G as a pink square; knit those squares in milkyway. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Is it a sweater or a vest?
A vest — a sleeveless top with short ribbed cap sleeves at the shoulders. The pattern calls it a vest (and “sweater” once, in the finishing). In the photo it is worn over a lavender long-sleeved top; the top and the denim skirt are not part of the pattern.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 6, 8, 10 and 12 years — with a chest of 70, 73, 76 and 80 cm, and 26, 29, 32 and 35 cm from the underarm to the hem. It is knitted from the top down, so you can try it on as you go — the pattern says so itself. To change the length, knit more or fewer plain rounds before the dot border (our suggestion).
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for 12 years: 4 balls of black and one each of garnet red, mimosa, apricot, spring green heather, lagoon heather, milkyway and violet heather — 11 balls. Sizes 6 and 8 use 3 balls of black (10 in all). The seven other colours go into the dots and the two ribs only, so expect some of each left over (our estimate). The pattern calls garnet red, spring green heather, lagoon heather and violet heather simply “garnet”, “spring green”, “lagoon” and “violet”.
How are the cap sleeves made?
When the yoke chart is done, the back and front are knitted in stocking stitch while the stitches over each arm are worked in K1, P1 rib for 3 rounds. In the next round the arm stitches are bound off in rib — the pattern warns not to bind off too loosely. That leaves a short ribbed band over each shoulder. Then 8 (8, 9, 9) stitches are cast on under each arm for the body, and at the end a few duplicate stitches strengthen the corners where body and yoke meet.
Is there a mistake in the pattern?
Yes, in the round where the arm bands are bound off. It is printed “K 55 (58, 60, 63) sts, bind off in rib 41 (42, 44, 45) sts, k 55 (58, 60, 63) sts, bind off as before 41 (42, 44, 45) sts, k 55 (58, 60, 63) sts”. The last “k 55 (58, 60, 63) sts” is the start of the body round that follows, printed twice — knit across the back only once (our reading); the round is already complete after the second bind-off: 55 + 41 + 55 + 41 = 192 stitches in size 6, the whole round. In sizes 8 and 10 the rib rounds before it have 57 (59) stitches for the back and front and 43 (45) for each arm band, but this round says 58 (60) and 42 (44). Knit the first stitch of each arm band as part of the back or front before it and bind off the other 42 (44) — that gives the 58 (60) back and front stitches the body needs (our reading; the totals are the same). Sizes 6 and 12 match as printed.
Which version is in the photos?
The first photo — the younger girl with braids — shows this colourful version, knitted in the original colours. The older girl on the stone wall wears the black heather and natural version, which is sold as a separate kit.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) circular needles in 40 and 60 cm; a 3.5 mm (US 4) circular needle in 60 cm; 3.5 mm (US 4) double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. A tapestry needle is not included.
