Good to know

Doppa — your questions, answered

Can I still buy the colours in the photos?
For the natural version, yes: black heather (0005), murky (1420) and straw (1418) are all still made. For the colourful version, five of the eight are still made — black (0059), garnet (1409), spring green (1406), lagoon (9423) and violet (1414). Mustard (9264), orange (1410) and lilac (1413) are no longer made. Our colourful kit uses 1703 mimosa for mustard (a brighter golden yellow), 1704 apricot for orange (browner and less vivid) and 1702 milkyway for lilac (a pale, clearly bluer shade). The chart key draws lilac as a pink square; in the photo the big dots are a soft lavender.
Is it a sweater or a vest?
A vest — a sleeveless top with short ribbed cap sleeves at the shoulders. The pattern calls it a vest (and “sweater” once, in the finishing). In the photos it is worn over long-sleeved tops, which are not part of the pattern.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — 6, 8, 10 and 12 years — with a chest of 70, 73, 76 and 80 cm and 26, 29, 32 and 35 cm from the underarm to the hem. Because it is knitted from the top down, you can try it on as you go. For the natural version the pattern says to knit the body “as long as desired”.
How much yarn do I need?
Léttlopi in 50 g balls. Colourful: black (0059) 3 (3, 4, 4) and one ball each of the seven other colours — 10 balls for 6 and 8 years, 11 for 10 and 12 years. Natural: black heather (0005) 3 (4, 4, 5) and one ball each of murky and straw — 5 (6, 6, 7) balls.
How do I knit the natural version from the charts?
The charts are drawn in the colourful version’s colours. The key gives two codes for each square, colourful first and natural second: black heather (0005) is the ground; murky (1420) takes the place of mustard, orange, spring green and lilac — the flowers, the squares and the outer part of the dots; straw (1418) takes the place of garnet, lagoon and violet — the centres. The natural version has no dot border on the body. The pattern does not say which colour its hem rib is; in the photo it is black heather.
Is there a mistake in the pattern?
Yes, in the round where the arm bands are bound off. It is printed “K 55 (58, 60, 63) sts, bind off in rib 41 (42, 44, 45) sts, k 55 (58, 60, 63) sts, bind off as before 41 (42, 44, 45) sts, k 55 (58, 60, 63) sts”. The last “k 55 (58, 60, 63) sts” is the start of the body round that follows, printed twice — knit across the back only once (our reading). In sizes 8 and 10 the rib rounds before it have 57 (59) stitches for the back and front and 43 (45) for each arm band, but this round says 58 (60) and 42 (44). Knit the first stitch of each arm band as part of the back or front before it and bind off the other 42 (44) (our reading; the totals are the same). Sizes 6 and 12 match as printed.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo, a page with the materials for both versions, the sizes and the instructions, a page with both charts and the colour key, and Ístex’s back cover.
