Why you'll love it

  • A countdown with a story each nightThe lads come down from the mountains one at a time, from 12 December to Christmas Eve. Hang one each evening and the tree fills up as they arrive.
  • From bogeymen to gift-bringersThey began as trolls used to frighten children, and in 1746 a public decree told parents to stop, the National Museum of Iceland records. Only in the 20th century did they start leaving gifts in shoes.
  • No two alikeEvery one has his own pose, and most carry their loot: a milk pail, two spoons, a pot, a bowl lid, a key, a bowl of skyr, sausages, a window frame, a joint and a hook, a candle.
  • The artist behind themBrian Pilkington has illustrated Icelandic books since 1981 and designed this series for Sólarfilma, a souvenir publisher founded in 1961.
  • Eleven of twelve reviews give five starsBuyers write about a keepsake for the tree for many years, and about the folklore as much as the ornaments.

Questions people ask before they buy

In what order do they arrive?
One a day, as the National Museum of Iceland lists them: 12 December Sheep-Cote Clod, 13 Gully Gawk, 14 Stubby (Shorty), 15 Spoon Licker, 16 Pot Licker, 17 Bowl Licker, 18 Door Slammer, 19 Skyr Glutton, 20 Sausage Thief, 21 Window Peeper, 22 Doorway Sniffer, 23 Meat Hook, and on Christmas Eve, Candle Beggar.
Is the Yule Cat one of the Yule Lads?
No. In Icelandic folklore the Yule Cat eats people who get no new clothes for Christmas. Some say it is the house cat of Grýla and Leppalúði, the lads' troll parents, though the National Museum of Iceland calls that a fairly recent addition to the story.
Does the set ship free?
To the US, Canada and Europe, yes: orders over $149 ship free there. Elsewhere, shipping is shown at checkout before you pay.
I already have a few. Can I buy just the missing ones?
Yes. Every ornament in the set is also sold on its own, so you can fill the gaps one by one.
