Lopi 18 No. 37 — your questions, answered

Why are five colours different from the pattern?
Dark sienna (9118), rust (9392), antique gold (9332), forest heather (0014) and forest green (0484) are no longer made in Álafosslopi (0484 is still made only as Plötulopi, a different yarn). Chocolate heather (0867) takes the place of dark sienna — colour D, the open circles: the dark stripe at the foot of the brown, rust and gold blocks and at the top of the blue and purple blocks. It is a dark brown, lighter and browner than the near-black red-brown in this shaded photo. Amber heather (9971) takes the place of rust — colour E, the diagonal lines: the red stripe in the middle of those blocks. It is a copper-orange heather, clearly lighter and more orange than the deep brick red in the photo, so those stripes will read copper rather than red. Golden heather (9964) takes the place of antique gold — colour F, the small dots: the gold stripe at the top of those blocks. It is a mustard gold, clearly brighter and more orange than the dull ochre in the photo. Teal heather (9967) takes the place of forest heather — colour G, the V: the dark teal-green stripe. It is a dark petrol green, close to the photo, a little bluer. Cypress green heather (9966) takes the place of forest green — colour H, the dotted squares: the darkest stripe, just above the teal. It is a very dark olive green, noticeably lighter than the near-black green in the photo. Oatmeal (0085), light beige (0086), dark denim heather (0010) and quiet purple (0163) are the pattern’s own colours. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
Which size should I knit?
Four sizes — XS, M, L and XL; the pattern has no S — with a chest of 105 to 123 cm and a length of 62 to 72 cm to the front neck. Sleeves are 41 to 45 cm for women and 46 to 50 cm for men. The pattern gives one yarn amount for both sleeve lengths.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for size XL: 8 balls of oatmeal heather and 1 each of light beige heather, denim heather, dark soft purple, chocolate heather, amber heather, golden heather, teal heather and cypress green heather — 16 balls. XS uses 6 balls of oatmeal heather (14 in all), M 7 (15), and L 8 (16), like XL.
Do I have to cut my knitting?
Yes, as the pattern is written. The welt is knitted back and forth; then the body is joined into a round with three purl stitches at the centre front. At the end you sew two rows of machine stitching into the purl stitch at each side and on both sides of the centre purl stitch, then cut up the centre one, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also explains how to knit the body, sleeves and yoke back and forth in rows instead, with a garter-stitch edge stitch at each side — then there is nothing to cut.
Which zipper do I need?
The pattern lists a zipper but gives no length or type, and it is not included. A separating (open-ended) zipper is the usual choice for a cardigan (our suggestion). By our calculation from the row gauge, the front opening — from the hem to the top of the folded collar — is about 62, 68, 70 and 72 cm in XS, M, L and XL; the printed length to the front neck seems to include the collar. Measure your finished cardigan before you buy the zipper (our suggestion).
Anything to watch for?
A few things. At the neckband the pattern says to decrease 11 (15:15:19) stitches on the first row, to 60 (60:64:64) — but that leaves 59 (59:63:63). The rib needs 60 or 64 stitches, so decrease 10 (14:14:18) instead (our calculation). At the underarms in sizes XS, M and XL the body puts one stitch more on the holder than the sleeve (9 against 8 in XS), so you graft one stitch more on the body side; knit two together or ease it in (our suggestion). “Read Tension on page 3” refers to the Lopi 18 book — page 3 of this leaflet holds only charts; the tension is the one printed: 13 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm on 6 mm. The chart key prints the old codes: read 9118 as chocolate heather, 9392 as amber heather, 9332 as golden heather, 0014 as teal heather and 0484 as cypress green heather. The pattern calls 0163 “quiet purple” and 0010 “dark denim heather”; in our shop they are Dark Soft Purple and Denim Heather.
Which photo shows this version?
The young man on the right, in the zipped cardigan — Design 37, knitted in the original colours, in cool, overcast light that makes the oatmeal and light beige look greyer (our reading). The woman on the left wears Design 36 from the same leaflet, a light beige pullover, which is not available as a kit. The grey T-shirt and the jeans are not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
A 4.5 mm (US 7) circular needle in 80 cm; 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 40 and 80 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The pattern lists only 4.5 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm after the cuff with only 42 or 48 stitches — about 32 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few to go round a 40 cm circular — so the kit adds 6 mm double-pointed needles. The zipper is not included.
