Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 36 & 37 — your questions, answered

What are No. 36 and No. 37?
Two different garments by Védís Jónsdóttir, printed together in one leaflet from Ístex’s Lopi 18, each with its own materials, sizes, instructions and charts. No. 36 is a pullover in light beige, in sizes XS, M and L with one sleeve length per size; in the photo a woman wears it. No. 37 is a zipped cardigan in oatmeal for women and men, in sizes XS, M, L and XL, with a sleeve length for each; in the photo a young man wears it. Both are knitted in Álafosslopi on 6 mm needles, with a round yoke of small staggered blocks. Neither has a size S.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
For No. 37, four of its nine colours are still made by Ístex: oatmeal (0085), light beige (0086), dark denim heather (0010) and quiet purple (0163) — our shop calls them oatmeal heather, light beige heather, denim heather and dark soft purple, so go by the colour numbers. Dark sienna (9118), rust (9392), antique gold (9332) and forest heather (0014) are no longer made, and forest green (0484) is now made only as Plötulopi, a different yarn. Our No. 37 kit uses 0867 chocolate heather for dark sienna — a dark brown, lighter and browner than the near-black red-brown in this shaded photo; 9971 amber heather for rust — clearly lighter and more orange than the deep brick red; 9964 golden heather for antique gold — clearly brighter and more orange than the dull ochre; 9967 teal heather for forest heather — a dark petrol green, close to the photo, a little bluer; and 9966 cypress green heather for forest green — a very dark olive green, noticeably lighter than the near-black green in the photo. For No. 36, only light beige (0086) and quiet purple (0163) are still made; mauve (9215), pond heather (9736), golden green (9240), antique gold (9332), berry heather (0032) and burgundy (9210) are no longer made, and there is no kit for No. 36.
Which size should I knit?
No. 36: XS, M and L, with a chest of 102, 111 and 115 cm, a length of 62, 68 and 70 cm to the centre front neck and sleeves of 41, 43 and 45 cm to the underarm. Its 132 (144, 150) body stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so it is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. No. 37: XS, M, L and XL, with a chest of 105, 114, 118 and 123 cm, a length of 62, 68, 70 and 72 cm, and sleeves of 41, 43, 45 and 45 cm for women or 46, 48, 50 and 50 cm for men. Both bodies are knitted to 38 (42, 43) cm before the yoke — 44 cm in No. 37’s XL. There is no size S in either.
How much yarn do I need?
Álafosslopi in 100 g balls. No. 36: light beige (0086) 6 (6, 7) and 1 ball each of the seven contrast colours — 13 balls in XS and M, 14 in L. No. 37: oatmeal (0085) 6 (7, 8, 8) and 1 ball each of the eight contrast colours — 14 balls in XS, 15 in M, 16 in L and XL; one amount for both sleeve lengths.
How are No. 36’s twisted ribs knitted?
The hem, cuffs and neckband are 8 rounds of K2, P2 rib. In rounds 3 and 7 each pair of knit stitches is crossed: knit into the front of the second stitch, then knit the first, and slip both off the needle together. That makes two rows of small twists in the rib. No. 37’s ribs are plain K2, P2.
Do I have to cut No. 37?
Yes, as the pattern is written. The welt is knitted back and forth; then the body is joined into a round with three purl stitches at the centre front. At the end you sew two rows of machine stitching into the purl stitch at each side and on both sides of the centre purl stitch, then cut up the centre one, so you need a sewing machine. The pattern also explains how to knit the body, sleeves and yoke back and forth in rows instead, with a garter-stitch edge stitch at each side — then there is nothing to cut.
Which zipper do I need for No. 37?
The pattern lists a zipper but gives no length or type. A separating (open-ended) zipper is the usual choice for a cardigan (our suggestion). By our calculation from the row gauge, the front opening — from the hem to the top of the folded collar — is about 62, 68, 70 and 72 cm in XS, M, L and XL; the printed length to the front neck seems to include the collar. Measure your finished cardigan before you buy the zipper (our suggestion).
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. At No. 37’s neckband the pattern says to decrease 11 (15, 15, 19) stitches on the first row, to 60 (60, 64, 64) — but that leaves 59 (59, 63, 63). The rib needs 60 or 64 stitches, so decrease 10 (14, 14, 18) instead (our calculation). At the underarms of No. 37, in XS, M and XL the body puts one stitch more on the holder than the sleeve (9 against 8 in XS); in No. 36’s size L the sleeve puts one more than the body (11 against 10). Ease the extra stitch in when you graft (our suggestion). No. 36’s neckband is cast off knitwise “on WS of work” although it is knitted in the round, so turn the work and cast off from the inside (our reading). Both say “Read Tension on page 3”, but page 3 of this leaflet holds only No. 36’s charts; it must mean a page of the Lopi 18 book (our reading) — the tension is the one printed, 13 stitches and 18 rows to 10 cm on 6 mm. The needle lists have no 6 mm double-pointed needles, but each sleeve changes to 6 mm with only 42 or 48 stitches — about 32 to 37 cm round (our calculation), too few for a 40 cm circular — so you will need them (our reading). And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The two garments are, in their original colours: the woman on the left wears No. 36, and the young man on the right wears No. 37, zipped up (the leaflet’s cover prints the numbers beside them). The jeans and his grey T-shirt are not part of the pattern.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 6 pages: the cover photo of both garments, a page with a small photo of No. 36, its materials, sizes, tension and all its instructions, a page with No. 36’s two charts and key, a page with a small photo of No. 37, its materials, sizes, tension and all its instructions, a page with No. 37’s chart and key, and Ístex’s back cover.
