A laughing girl on a sunny hillside in the Lopi 18 no. 14 sweater — red tweed with a yoke of marled navy-purple, green and orange-gold zigzags and small diamonds, navy-purple spikes at the neck, and the same zigzags above the cuff rib (shown in the original colours — six are replaced in this kit: a plain ruby red, a darker violet, a solid spring green, a deeper apricot). Her hat is in the pattern, but its yarn is not in this kit; the trousers and the doll’s sweater (Lopi 18 no. 12) are not in the pattern

Lopi 18 No. 14 — your questions, answered

Why are six colours different from the pattern?
Fire tweed (9738) and the Léttlopi colours iris (9440), grass (9444), leaf (9441), pumpkin (9436) and goldenrod (9435) are no longer made by Ístex. Ruby red heather (9962) takes the place of fire tweed. It is the main colour, M, the empty squares in the charts: the body, sleeves, ribs, neckband and the red in the yoke and borders. It is a deep red of about the same shade as in the photo, a little darker, and a plain heather: the small green, yellow and blue flecks of the tweed will not be there. Violet heather (1414) takes the place of iris, colour B. It is held together with the navy (9420, colour A, the pattern’s own) for the filled dots in the charts — the dark zigzags and diamonds and the spikes at the neck. Violet heather is a clearly darker purple than the iris, so this marl will look darker, closer to navy, than in the photo. Spring green heather (1406) takes the place of both grass and leaf, colours C and D, the open circles. In the photo the green is a twist of an emerald strand and a lime strand; with two strands of spring green heather it becomes one solid spring green — lighter, softer and more yellow than the emerald, close to the lime. The kit has 2 balls of it. Apricot (1704) takes the place of pumpkin, colour E, and mimosa (1703) of goldenrod, colour F; held together they are the small dots, the orange-gold marl. Apricot is a deeper, more burnt orange than the bright pumpkin in the photo; mimosa is close to the golden yellow, a little more orange. So this marl will be deeper and more copper-coloured than in the photo. You can choose other shades in the colour picker.
How do the two-strand colours work?
The three pattern colours are not single yarns. The key gives each chart symbol as “one strand each” of two Léttlopi colours: you hold the two strands together and knit them as one, against the single strand of red Álafosslopi. In this kit: filled dot = navy blue (A) with violet heather (B); open circle = spring green heather twice (C and D — one strand from each of the two balls); small dot = apricot (E) with mimosa (F). Two strands of Léttlopi together are about as thick as one of Álafosslopi (our note). Only the key says this — the materials list just lists six Léttlopi balls.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 78 to 97 cm, 42 to 58 cm long to the front neck and sleeves of 25 to 38 cm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child.
Will I have yarn left over?
The kit holds the amount for the 152 cm size: 5 balls of ruby red heather Álafosslopi and 6 balls of Léttlopi — 1 each of navy blue, violet heather, apricot and mimosa, and 2 of spring green heather. The 110 cm size uses 3 balls of red, the 122 and 134 cm sizes 4, and the 140 cm size 5; the Léttlopi is 1 ball of each colour in every size. By our rough count the busiest pair uses about 60 to 70 m of each strand in the largest size, out of about 100 m in a ball (our calculation), so some Léttlopi will be left over.
Is the hat in the photo included?
The pattern for the matching hat is in the leaflet, but its yarn is not in this kit: the pattern gives no amounts for the hat’s Léttlopi colours, only 1 ball of the red for either hat size. To knit it too, you need 1 more ball of ruby red heather (9962) Álafosslopi if you knit the sweater in the 140 or 152 cm size; in the smaller sizes the 1 or 2 whole balls of red left in the kit should cover it (our calculation), and the Léttlopi left over from the sweater should be enough for its 15-round band (our estimate). The hat comes in two sizes, 110/122 and 134/140/152 — about 51 and 55 cm round (our calculation) — with an 8 cm rib brim, worn folded up in the photo.
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. In the 110 and 140 cm sizes each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8; knit two together on the sleeve side or ease the extra one in (our suggestion). In the 122, 134 and 140 cm sizes the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back when the yoke is joined; the totals are right, so knit it as written. Start Chart 1 where it marks your size (“begin body”) or “begin sleeve”, and skip the yoke rounds marked for your size. The key prints the old codes: read 9738 as ruby red heather, 9440 as violet heather, 9444 and 9441 as spring green heather, 9436 as apricot and 9435 as mimosa.
What else is in the photo?
The laughing girl wears this sweater and the matching hat, knitted in the original colours. The doll’s red sweater is Lopi 18 no. 12, a different pattern, sold as its own kit (Lopi 18 No. 12). The dark trousers are not part of the pattern.
What does the kit with needles include?
4.5 mm (US 7) and 6 mm (US 10) circular needles in 60 cm; 4.5 mm and 6 mm double-pointed needles — ADDI, as named in the pattern. The 6 mm double-pointed needles are for the sleeves and the top of the yoke.
