Good to know

Lopi 18 No. 14 — your questions, answered

How do the two-strand colours work?
The three pattern colours are not single yarns. The key gives each chart symbol as “one strand each” of two Léttlopi colours: you hold the two strands together and knit them as one, against the single strand of fire tweed Álafosslopi. Filled dot = navy (A) with iris (B); open circle = grass (C) with leaf (D); small dot = pumpkin (E) with goldenrod (F). Only the key says this — the materials list just lists six Léttlopi balls. Two strands of Léttlopi together are about as thick as one of Álafosslopi (our note). The hat’s chart uses the same three symbols.
Can I still buy the colours in the photo?
Only navy (9420), one of the Léttlopi strands — our shop calls it navy blue. The main colour, fire tweed (9738), a red Álafosslopi tweed, and the Léttlopi colours iris (9440), grass (9444), leaf (9441), pumpkin (9436) and goldenrod (9435) are no longer made by Ístex. Our red No. 14 kit uses 9962 ruby red heather for fire tweed — a deep red of about the same shade, a little darker, and a plain heather: the small green, yellow and blue flecks of the tweed are not there; 1414 violet heather for iris, a clearly darker purple, so the navy-purple marl looks darker, closer to navy; 1406 spring green heather for both grass and leaf, so the green marl becomes one solid spring green — lighter, softer and more yellow than the emerald strand, close to the lime; and 1704 apricot for pumpkin, a deeper, more burnt orange, with 1703 mimosa for goldenrod, close to the golden yellow, a little more orange — so the orange-gold marl looks deeper and more copper-coloured than in the photo.
Which size should I knit?
Five sizes by the child’s height — 110, 122, 134, 140 and 152 cm — with a chest of 78, 83, 88, 92 and 97 cm, 42 to 58 cm long to the centre front neck and sleeves of 25 to 38 cm to the underarm. The pattern gives heights, not ages, so measure the child. The body’s 102 to 126 stitches come to the printed chest at the pattern’s gauge (our check), so the chest is the finished sweater’s measurement all the way round. The hat comes in two sizes, 110/122 and 134/140/152 — about 51 and 55 cm round (our calculation).
How much yarn do I need?
Fire tweed Álafosslopi in 100 g balls, 3 (4, 4, 5, 5), and 1 ball of each of the six Léttlopi colours (50 g balls) in every size — 9 (10, 10, 11, 11) balls in all. By our rough count — the stitches plus the strands carried behind them — the busiest pair, navy with iris, uses about 80 to 90 m of each strand in the largest size, out of about 100 m in a ball (our calculation). The hat takes 1 more ball of fire tweed in either size; its list names the six Léttlopi colours with no amounts. Its 15-round band takes about 13 m of each navy and iris strand (our calculation), so what is left from the sweater should cover it up to the 134 cm size; for the 140 and 152 cm sizes allow 1 more ball of each yarn in the navy-iris pair (our estimate).
Anything to watch for?
A few small things. In the 110 and 140 cm sizes each sleeve puts 9 stitches on the underarm holder and the body 8, so you graft 9 stitches to 8; ease the extra one in (our suggestion). In the 122, 134 and 140 cm sizes the front has 2 stitches fewer than the back when the yoke is joined; the totals are right, so knit it as written. Start chart 1 where it marks your size for the body, or at “begin sleeve”, and skip the yoke rounds marked for your size. The hat page has no key of its own: chart 3 uses the sweater’s three symbols, in the same pairs. And the pattern calls a circular needle a “twin pin”.
Is everything in the photo part of the pattern?
The girl’s sweater and hat are — the hat worn with its rib brim folded up. The doll’s red sweater, marked 12 on the cover, is Lopi 18 no. 12, a different pattern; the doll’s and the girl’s dark trousers are not part of this one.
How do I get the pattern?
The PDF is emailed to you right after purchase. Nothing is posted. It is in English and has 4 pages: the cover photo; a page with a small photo, the materials, sizes, tension, the body instructions, both sweater charts and the key; a page with the sleeves, yoke, neckband and making up, and the hat, with its photo, materials, tension, instructions and chart; and Ístex’s back cover.
