Appolo lakkrís konfekt: a 300 g box of mixed Icelandic liquorice — layered squares of black liquorice with pink, yellow and white coconut-paste layers, plain liquorice tubes and filled pieces. The liquorice is made with salmiak salt, so it is sweet first and salty-bitter after: the finish that makes Icelandic lakkrís Icelandic. This is the box for people who already love liquorice; sceptics should start with Þristur.

Appolo is the liquorice line of Góa, the Garðabær confectioner, which took over the Drift liquorice works in 2002.

Contains wheat (gluten), coconut and gelatine; no almonds in the list. Also sold in boxes of 10.

Is it like liquorice allsorts?

Same idea — layered squares, tubes, filled pieces — but an Icelandic recipe. The liquorice is made with salmiak salt, so the finish is salty-bitter rather than purely sweet.

Is there marzipan in it?

No. There are no almonds in the ingredient list. The pink, yellow and white layers are a soft coconut paste; some shops call it marzipan, the list says coconut.

Is it vegetarian?

No — it contains gelatine.

How strong is it?

This is proper Icelandic liquorice with a salmiak edge. If you are new to lakkrís, start with Þristur or Bingó, where chocolate softens it, and come here once you are sure.

Does it ship well in summer?

There is no chocolate in this box, so heat is far less of a worry than with our chocolate bags. Liquorice can soften a little in a warm parcel and firms up again at room temperature.
