Are these the thick Icelandic socks?

No, these are the lighter pair. Varma's thick Icelandic wool socks are a dense boot sock for walking and cold floors; these have angora in the blend and a finer knit, so they are softer on bare skin and fit in a normal shoe. Thick for boots, angora for the house, is how most people use the two.

Why put angora in a sock?

Angora is the fine fibre of the angora rabbit, light and very soft, and one of the warmest natural fibres for its weight. Blended with wool it gives a sock that feels downy on the skin and still keeps its shape and warmth wash after wash.

Which size do I pick?

The bands are European shoe sizes: 36–39, 40–43 and 44–47. Take the one your usual EU size falls in; the knit has enough give that a size at the top of a band is fine. The same three bands serve men and women.

How often do they need washing?

Less often than cotton. Wool and angora air fresh between wears, so a night over a chair is usually enough. When they do need it, wash them inside out on a wool programme with wool detergent, pull them into shape and dry flat, away from the tumble dryer.
