Overview
What's in the kit
Uni, from Ístex’s Lopi 24: plain ankle socks in thick Álafosslopi, knitted tightly on 5 mm needles, with a top edge in amber heather that rolls down by itself. The heel is knitted in last (an afterthought heel), and heel and toe have the same square finish. The pattern’s sapphire blue heather (9968) is no longer made; this kit has 1233 space blue in its place.
Included
- Icelandic Álafosslopi wool yarn — enough for one pair in either size
- Knitting pattern in English (PDF) — emailed right after purchase
- ADDI knitting needles — only if you choose the kit with needles

Sizes
Two sizes, as the pattern names them: “Ladies/children” and “Men”. The pattern gives no shoe sizes or foot lengths — the leg is 14 (16) cm, and you knit the foot until it reaches a little past the little toe, trying it on as you go. There are 34 (36) stitches around the foot, about 23 (24) cm at the pattern’s gauge (our calculation).
Gauge
15 sts × 22 rows = 10 cm (4″) in stocking stitch on 5 mm needles. The pattern says the socks are knitted tightly.
Needles used in the pattern (included when you choose the kit with needles)
5 mm (US 8) double-pointed needles — the pattern works on five
Not included
A short length of waste yarn in another colour, for the afterthought heel.
How it is knitted
Knitted in the round from the top down on five double-pointed needles. Eight rounds of stocking stitch in amber heather make the top edge, which rolls outwards by itself. The leg and foot are plain stocking stitch in the blue. At the heel, 15 (16) stitches are knitted with waste yarn and then again in blue, and the foot carries on to the toe. The toe is decreased to 18 (20) stitches and finished square: a 4-stitch band is knitted sideways across the top and sole stitches and grafted to a cast-off edge. Last, the waste yarn is pulled out, the heel stitches are picked up and decreased to 18 (20), and the heel is finished with the same sideways band as the toe.
Pattern from Lopi No. 24 (no. 22), Ístex. No designer is named in the pattern.

Why you'll love it
- Rolled topEight rounds of amber stocking stitch curl down on their own — no rib, no sewing.
- Afterthought heelThe leg and foot are knitted straight through; the heel goes in at the end, where the waste yarn was.
- Square heel and toeA small band knitted sideways and grafted gives both ends the same blunt shape.
